Default Left Turn Signal Issues

Hello Everyone.

My 1989 XJ just offered me a new problem to solve. I try to use my left turn signal and the indicator will light up but not flash. Outside, the turn signals just light up and stay on, too. Both front and rear. Once again, only on the left side. Everything is normal and working properly on the right side. Also, the whole time I have owned the Jeep, the left turn indicator glows slightly anytime the headlights are on. Now the darn thing is bright as a X-Mas tree.

I have only owned this Jeep for a few months. This problem is something I have to fix soon because my wife's car is on it's last leg and the Jeep is all we can truly count on until her car is replaced. And, I don't see her car problem solved anytime soon. To make matters worse, cash is something that is in very short supply right now so the Jeep repair has to be DIY. No choice.

Any ideas? Suggestions? Solutions? Questions? I could really use the knowledge and wisdom all of you have right now. Some things I get but, electrical gremlins are just a big mystery to me.

Thanks,

-Lynn

For a free (possible) fix, see my sig, #1, and Cruiser's tips. You should also try replacing the bulbs. Sometimes one bad bulb can do weird things.

OK, I'll start there.
Did not know about the plug by the air box.

Thank you.

behind your spare tire is a panel. Pull the tire, pull the panel, the whole back end wiring hub is there. Its a place that often corrodes and needs new grounds and cleaning-

I had my flasher relay go out last month, both dash indicator lights were faintly illuminated before it went out completely. Now my turn signals work fine, but the left indicator light is faintly lit with headlights on only. I have a suspicion new flasher is going bad already. I have not had time to test anything yet, when I do I will post back. Or I might just get another relay for $4 at napa and try it. Cost versus time does come into the equation sometimes .

Yep. For 4 bucks, it's worth giving it a shot.

Please do. We all could learn from your experience.

As for my turn signal problem, it seemed to correct itself. After three days my left indicator started working properly again. Just like it had never happened.
I do, however have the same problem that you do. The left indicator is faintly lit when the headlights are on. When I get a chance, I'll swap out the flasher relay.

Thanks for shareing your experience.

Good to know. I have to tear into that area at some point. I have a used OEM hitch but no wiring to go with it. Maybe I can kill two birds with one stone.

Ok I got out to troubleshoot. Diagnosis, bad bulb front left signal not the side marker but the one below headlight. That bulb was flashing a few weeks ago when flasher went out, good thing I checked bulbs again first thing, 2 minute diagnosis.

Werewolf, did you try a flasher ? I would also check those bulbs for burnt spots on the left side. Might be a bulb going out, 2 filaments.
