Default Length of Fuel Line from Tank to Filter?

1996 XJ Sport 4x4, manual

How long is the fuel line from the tank to the fuel filter?

Finally changing fuel filter again and it dawned on me that the lines are factory. Going to get the finest O'Reilly has to offer for both ends, along with the fancy fuel line clamps for the vehicle line side of the connections.

It's probably a few feet. I'd buy extra and just cut it. Use the rest for the rubber line on the other side of the fuel filter.

I don't believe the specialty fuel clips are required. I used regular hose clamps and everything is fine.

I have scroll tightening hose clamps on there now, but have fallen out of like with them. Will use the spring clamps on the filter sides of the connection and have the fancy spring clamp tool for them too.

O'Reilly, or anyplace else, a cautionary tale.

Check what is written on the hose before you leave the counter.

Bought 6' of 3/8" fuel line at O'Reilly (the area warehouse, not a little store) and after I left I noticed in green lettering it said 50 PSI, NOT FOR FUEL INJECTION.
Returned to store, they apologized and got 6' from a different reel, apologized that the first reel was in the fuel injection section by mistake.
Second length was 60 PSI, NOT FOR FUEL INJECTION in white lettering. Caught this before I was out the door this time.
Third one was 225 PSI Fuel Injection Line.

Not sure what the other hose is made from or what the deal is.

Be careful out there.

You can try Oreilly's, but I prefer napa for that reason. (Also, there are no oreilly's by me). Most large parts store employees may not understand what you are looking for, if they even carry it.

I think I got 3 feet for the 3/8, and 2 feet of the 5/16, when I did my fuel pump. I had plenty of leftover hose from both.

What did you use the 5/16" on? All I got was 3/8" (Edit: Ah, the outlet side of the filter is 5/16")

They guy understood fine what he was supposed to get, he just did not read the writing on what he actually lopped off.

Yeah, when I did mine, I knew I was not going to be able to get molded hoses, so I just went to Napa. The only other options by me are Pep Boys (not too bad with selection and price), and Autozone (NOPE).

If I remember correctly, the supply hose to filter is 3/8, and the return line is 5/16. The stub hose off the fuel filter is 5/16 as well, i think.

I've been told(by lots of people) the rubber fuel line from the filter to the gas tank is 5/16 not 3/8. The reason being 5/16 fits a little tighter and won't cause air to come in. 3/8 should work as well, but just make sure the clamps are tight.
I used 5/16 without issues.

There were changes between Red's 1992 and our 1996. My '96 has no return line. I doubt yours does either. It should be 1 fuel line running from tank to front.

The "in" side of my filter is significantly larger than the "out" side. 3/8" fits snug going in, 5/16" fits snug going out. Didn't try 5/16" on the fat side, but 3/8" is so snug I doubt anything smaller will go. Yes, no return line. Got some high pressure fuel line clamps that are the right size and fit snug before tightening, those will secure rubber to hard lines. Spring clamps that came with the filter will be on the filter side of the rubber.

Vroom, I knew they changed it at some point, I always thought they made that change in 1997. When did they change it?

318, you would be correct, my apologies for the bad advice.

I believe 1995. 1995 XJs had the fuel pressure regulator in the engine bay right at the fuel rail. The 1996 got the fuel pump assembly on the side of the tank like older XJs but the fuel pressure regulator was moved to the fuel pump assembly in the fuel tank. 1997 had the whole assembly but it was on the top of the fuel tank instead of the side. 1996 is a one off year for many things including the fuel pump assembly. I believe 1995 was the last year for the return line but that's just a guess, not completely sure.
