A 3/4" socket on a breaker bar to hold the front crank bolt BTW. I've also wedged a screwdriver into the ring gear teeth to hold it from turning.
I have seen guys break stuff holding on to the crank bolt a strap wrench on the pully works well tho

You're not gonna break a 1/2" thread crank bolt tightening up flexplate to torque converter bolts. How many years of auto tech did you have?

20 years in school will not teach you what one year of working on a vehicle or other item can teach you.

I used to teach Radar Repair for the US Army and I can tell you that as much as we tried to inject real failures into the systems, nothing could truly duplicate a field failure.

I have not studied Auto Tech --- well OK back in 1973 I took half of an Auto Tech course in a public school Auto Tech Class-- had to quit half way through to GO ARMY !!!!!

Everything I have learned about auto tech was learned through HANDS ON training.

Here is one thing I know .... the guys who went to school for anything tend to OVER THINK what they went to school for .... the guys who learned it on their own tend to go at it a different way.

FWIW - I used to emphasize to my students this " I am not here to teach you Radar Technology, I am only here to teach you how to troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair.

Here is a good example of why Tech School is not always a good indicator of someones ability .....

We had a cable internet problem.

MY EXPERIENCE told me that the Cable Co had a serious issue on the line outside the home.

Cable Co told me they know better and that the problem was INSIDE my home and they forced me to accept a Technician ( Tech School Trained ) to come into my home and fix the problem.

Tech School Trained Tech comes out and hooks his little box to the coax to my modem. He said " signal is bad at this point ".

Now he goes back down the cable line checking it at EACH CONNECTION ... each one he said " bad here too ".

ONE HOUR LATER he is OUTSIDE the house checking the signal on the cable where it comes into the house. OOPS .... Bad here too!!!!

My teaching instincts kicked in and I gave him a quick lesson on how to save a lot of time ..........

NEXT TIME you roll up on someones home, check the OUTSIDE cable drop FIRST. If it is good there, then you know the problem is INSIDE the home.

Tech Schools these days are not doing so good a job as they did in years past!!!
