Default Lighting Problem

Alright guys n gals. I just bought some new foglights to put on my 90 laredo. the previous foglights+wiring was bad. I could not find where the wiring led to, so instead silly ole me decided to wire them to a fuse in the fuse box (instrument panel illumination) and ground them to the metal support in the dash, not thinking about how bad of an idea that was. but it worked and all was going well. two nights ago I was driving down the road when my foglights, taillights, and interior lights lost power. I checked the fuse box and they were all still intact. I have looked around for answers and I find things about it being the headlight switch or a fuse in the pdc. if anyone has any idea of where I should start or how I would greatly appreciate it. thank you.

I'd remove where you spliced in for the lights on the fuse box and see if anything changes.

What wattage are the lights you installed?

Agreed with the other post. Pull out what you did, put it back like it was. No shame in the occasional punt. Generally speaking, most lights will run from the lights to a relay, then from the relay to the switch. The switch will run to the fuse panel and relay goes to the battery. There is some variety on this but the basic principals are the same . Below is a pic to help.

I unhooked the lights and turned on my lights. still no interior lights or taillights. the lights are a 55w pair. the headlight switch is $15 at advance auto so after I check the relay I will go to the switch and see where that gets me. the diagram was extremely helpful Ched

When you remove the switch check the connection to make sure it didn't melt and causing the short. The connection is very common for melting.

I checked the headlight switch and it looked brand new. all the connections were good. I then found the foglight/headlight relay and the connections were burnt up, so I'll be stopping at advance on the way home to see if I can get a relay, then I'll be trying to rewire my foglights so they won't blow my interior again.
