-PB blaster or some equivalent.
-floor jack
-jack stands
-breaker/cheater bar
-case(s) of beer (optional)
-maybe a bfh
-plenty of sockets and wrenches
-if your doin the tracbar at the same time you'll need a pickel fork
i'm sure theres more, but thats all i can think of off the top of my head, you'll figure other things out as you go though. air tools do help, but it can be done w/out them.

BIG jackstands that can support your XJ by the frame to let the suspension hang.
You'll need a good variety of METRIC and SAE wrenches and sockets as the XJ is about half and half.
Lots of patience and some clothes that can get VERY grimey. A heated garage with good lighting would be great because this isn't gonna be no 10 minute job.

be careful when you are taking out the rear shock bolts. the four that go up into the unibody! really get them with some PB. if you bust them up in there from rust you have some work cut out for you. they get very "brittle" for the lack of a better word and you can easily sheer them.

Also very worth mentioning....be careful removing the front leaf spring bolts. Lots of PB needed here, too. Don't break the anchornuts of inside the frame or it's time to get the torch out.

use antisieze on bolts when you put them back in. if you do break the rear top shock bolts, which you probably will, you'll need a drill and a few drill bits as well as some new hardware for it.
