Default lockers and 4.88

Ok i have a 93 Cherokee country addition with the 8.25 in the rear. I have 35s and know that i need to have 4.88 gears. But i don't know if i have the 27 or the 29 spline and was wondering if some one could shead a little light on that because i have heard that the 27 is weak and i would like to know if it would be a waste of time to put all that into the axle when i should just go to the 29 spline and do all the work on it.

Now on to the lockers i was thinking about going with some Detroit lockers but i dont know too much about lockers do they eat up your tires, turn it into a positraction or what? Also i would like to know how exactly they work, and if i would need locking hubs or not. It is my DD and dont want it to chew up a set of tires on the road but i would like it to preform very well offroad. All opinions are welcome I am so lost so any help will be greatly appercaite.

Sorry for it being so long

unsure about i.d.'ing the spline count for your 8.25, however for the lockers... detroit is the "top dog" with the top price. an alternative for you might be the aussie locker but you'll have to id your 8.25 spline count before you approach their locker as it is only compatible with the 29 spline version. if you have 29 splines the aussie is half the cost of the detroit. since it's your DD stay away from locking the front unless you go with an ox locker which is selectable or plan on using locking hubs up front. now you're talking bucks$$$ best of luck! i'm sure a guru will post up about checking your spline count, hang in there...

Your rig came from the factory with 27 spline shafts.
Since you want to install a locker this would be the time to install 29 spline shafts.
If you want a full case locker your choices are:
ARB Model RD93 (29spline)
Detroit Model 187C179A

Id'ing the 8.25 spline count is simple and has been covered numerous times.

Nothing wrong with installing any locker in the front of a DD. You simply need to re-learn how to drive for various conditions depending on the locker chosen.

Ox Locker is not the only selectable available for the Dana30. ARB and Eaton E-lockers are better choises.
