how about lsd rear and locker front? that's what i wanted to do.
i have an 04 dakota with front locker and when i drive in the snow, i can go 40-50 mph in 6-8 inches of snow. the whole time the rear end is fishtailing, but the front end won't let go an inch. the rear is open dif.
i wouldn't mind making my xj that capable. or maybe even more capable.
but, i've also heard from my buddy with a ZJ that the stock dana 30 and 35 don't last long with lockers. how true is that?

Any dana 35 is a risk with a locker. Go easy on the pedal and run smaller tires and you will be ok (but still a slight risk). Go big on tires and mash the pedal and you'll snap a shaft.

Your rear might have fishtailed cuz it's lighter back there and it "floats" on the snow. The front end is alot heavy and can dig down for traction. Adding a locker back there will not solve fishtailing because both tires will be spinning and the rear will break loose more often, causing it to fishtail.

I wouldn't waste any money on LSD's. They don't pay for themselves fast enough to be worthy of spending money on.

First are you sure its a d35. I have just never seen one in a jeep that new. I might be wrong but I thought in xjs the d35 stopped in the 90d. My 91 95 and 99 all 8 1/4s.
But if it is a d35 and you don't drive on the road that much just weld it d35s are a dime a dozen. If you do drive on the road allot. Lockers are still worth their weight in gold. And if your not hard core now with a locker you will be, soon. Full locker in rear and electric in the front sense you probably don't have on bord air. They don't have to be dune at the same time.
As for lockers or a winch. You can get by without a winch if you wheel with other people. Witch you should by the way wheeling with full size rigs is just funny. If you wheel by your self and you shouldn't a winch will get you home.

its gonna be a while before i wheel hard enough for a locker (mostly becuase there isnt anywhere around here to go) but if i wanted to save a couple bucks by only locking one axle, would it would better to lock the front? since that would be pulling the weight of the vehicle as opposed to pushing it.

Front or rear is an age old debate. I don't know were I lie on. But rear is cheeper. And I know they use the d35 in all sorts of other jeeps for a long time but I have never seen one in an xj 94 or newer. Just never saw it said I could be wrong

The difference between my jeep locker was being able to drive on the beach in 2 wheel drive with a little air out or getting stuck...Tj

so if i put on lock rite locker in the front on my Dana 35 and an electric locker in the back will that work? the front locker wont engage unless theres power to the front axle right? and could i get away with an auto locker in the rear or is it better to have an electric locker in the rear?

Your front axle is a dana 30.

It's user preference. Some prefer auto locker in front and selectable locker in rear while others prefer the other way.

Front auto locker:

pros: Only locks in 4wd, increased traction, cost
Cons: reduces turning radius in 4wd, decreased turning ability in snow mud

Rear Auto Locker:

pros: Full time 100% traction to both rear tires, cost
cons: increased tire wear, chirping on turns, decreased turning radius (slightly)

Front Selectable locker:

pros: increased traction, ability to turn on and off during 4wd for tight turns
cons: decreased turning radius in 4wd and locked , cost

Rear Selectable locker:

Pros: Ability to turn on and off locker for 100% traction when needed.
Cons: cost

All lockers installed in stock axles increase the risk of axle wear and tear or breakage.

Again your front axle is a dana 30.

Dana 35's were only offered on jeeps as a rear axle.
