Locking tailgate?
I just picked up a stock 96 XJ, and I've noticed that the alleged "lock" on the tailgate is simply a button with a slot in it that opens the door. This is my first Jeep ever, is this normal? Would anyone know if I am able to put in a lock cylinder or if I am stuck with it? Thanks CF!!

yeah, the "slot" you see is simply the little door that cover the lock barrel to keep most crud out of it. So yes, it is locking, and it should just use your ignition key (or door key if you ever had the ignition changed out).

That's the thing, when I tried using the regular door/ignition key, it doesn't work, just pushes the whole thing in. I suppose the ignition must have been switched out then... lame. Thanks folks.

The ignition, door locks, and rear hatch lock should all be keyed the same. If the ignition has been changed the door key should still open the hatch. The locking mechanism may be jammed with dirt and corrosion. Spray some lubricant in the keyhole and work the key in and out a few times to see if it loosens up. Unless it has been wrecked in the rear in the past and the hatch was replaced with a junkyard piece.

does the crud door (that what I call that little metal piece covering the slot) open?
If the key is going all the way in and not turning, it might be seized, WD-40 should fix that. Then of course get the WD-40 out of there with some carb cleaner or something so it doesn't gum up.

If it is jammed beyond repair or has been replaced with a supplied key then you can get a new cylinder at the dealer. A new cylinder may or may not come with a new key or the dealer may be able to rekey it to match your current door key. It is fairly easy to install with basic hand tools and general mechanical knowledge. Should take less than an hour to do in the driveway.
