my oil pressure is good, i do not over heat at all but im starting to run right at 210 when i have a 180 thermostat so im a little worried. By wrench buddy thinks i just might need a new head gasket since im not running like crap and not over heating and no smoke.

yes i know exactly what they are and what they do. they are the boss of temperature. a 180 should easily keep a normal engine at 180 especially in cool weather. if it goes higher something is wrong.
my 3 veh gages go up to their normal max and do not go above, even in hot weather. the reason i often put you on ignore is your all knowing smart xxs attitude. dont bother comment to my posts, i wont see it.

No.
That's NOT how it works. The temperature rating of the thermostat does NOT determine the operating temperature.
All it determines is where the t-stat starts to open. There are many other factors that determine operating temperature.
If you do only short runs, you will see a lower operating temp with a lower thermostat. That's not good for your engine. But take it out for a longer trip and a properly operating Cherokee will settle at at around 210 even with a 160 t-stat.
If it does not, something is wrong.

i hung a blanket over the hood/grill and sat at idle. it slowly moved up to 200-205 in about 20 minutes,. the stat opened and the fan kept it cool. the gage never went to the 1/2 point, usually just below. the stat is the main control over temp.
remember we are usually operating in an ambient of under 80, a long way from 195. open stat and fan cools pretty well
why else is it in there? the mfgr wants most drive systems to run hot at 195 for good lube and efficiency
my 00 gets up to just under 200 in 4 miles in COLD weather, good hot heat.it climbs up slowly and stops right there at the same point, no movement. same as my other veh.
ill use my obd2 scanner to get some real readings soon.
160?, 180?, 195?, why do they make so many different?

couple yrs ago i did a temp test on a hot day logging each mile and temp in another vehicle with a 195 t stat. it got up to 195 reading thru the obd2 port with a good gage.

the tstat (and fans) TOGETHER in fact do determine the operating temp in a vehicle with a capable cooling system. xjs are not good comparisons with regard to engine temp bc so many of them are not operating at 100% and the fans aren't programmed to turn on until something silly like 218*.

If she is seeing higher temps at lower speeds/idle it could be the fan clutch. Costs $40 and easy to replace.
as far as losing coolant: I also have a 2000, and was also losing coolant. I could not find any leaks by looking around. I did an oil analysis and combustion leak test. Both came back good. If you really want to dive into it more I think you need to take the advice from others and do a pressure test. I chose not to do that and just replace the head with a new one from Clearwater. No more coolant loss.
Also it might be just the head gasket and not the head. I know two other people with 2000's- one has 280k miles (highway driving) on his, the other has 190k. The 190k had a bad head gasket at 150k (head was good) and the one with 280k miles has never had a problem with coolant loss/overheating/milky oil.
Check with your local Auto parts store, they should rent the pressure tester. You can go on Youtube, or ask someone here for help on how to use it. I can tell you that if you do need a new head, Clearwater is the best option. The head is $450 shipped to your door, with return postage for the old one. You will also need a gasket set which costs around $100 - $120, and I got new bolts which were about $35.
One more thing-- you mentioned you had a knock? you might want to address that before deciding to replace the head. Also I didn't see that you posted how many miles you have on the Jeep.

"Oh **** it's me" haha!
nah man it would be like following a beef on social media where you're not friends with one and their account is blocked so it's as if one person is arguing with a ghost, because I'm on ignore you know haha. And to think, I've been in the holiday spirit, happy and jolly since November. Because that's when the holidays start right Haha. Darnit.
