Default Looking for EGR valve for 1989 XJ

Hello -

I'm trying to get my jeep smogged and am looking for a new (or good used) EGR valve. Does anyone know where I could get one? I've called all the national parts stores, checked multiple sites online (Amazon, ebay, etc). Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Have you checked the EGR for functioning and determined it's bad? Did you check the solenoid on the driver side inner fender?

Test EGR

There are two parts, the valve and the transducer. The valve appears to be readily available. The transducer/valve combo seems to be out everywhere. I bought one last year from Napa, a local store had one in stock.

I got a 1990 that needed an egr valve last year. out of production. I was fortunate to find a NOS unit with help of a poster here, bought it off facebook market place. That said, they are rare! suggest you look at wreckers for an appropriate year jeep for parting out.

Now of course egrs can be rebuilt. so save your dead one. there are companies that have the tools to unflange the top of the vave, and install a new diaphragm , then put it back together again. I know folks do that to the hard to find egr on old Triumphs. You will need to search for that kind of rebuilder if you go that route, I dont know of them, its been decades, but I am sure someone does that still.

good luck

Thank you for the rebuild suggestions. Yes, I did test the EGR and the diaphragm will not hold vacuum.

I wish I could - I'm in California and the EGR is needed to pass smog emissions test.

Another question - Does anyone know if a EGR for the 4 cylinder engine would work? It has the same bolt hole pattern and ports. The inline 6 version requires 6 In.Hg at the vacuum. Would the 4 cylinder EGR require more or less vacuum?

If it bolts on, then you will likely be ok to pass smog with it. I bet the vacuum level to open is pretty close to same, as the principle of operation is same regardless of engine type. . the visual part of the test usually is simply to see if the stem moves when engine is reved. So if it turns on at a slightly different vacuum level, no worries.

At least your old egr will have core value to a rebuilder.

Whaddya mean the EGR is needed?

Just to be there? Or can they test the functioning?

I live in California and am trying to get it to pass emission testing. The jeep is showing high levels of NOX - which seems to be related to a non-functioning EGR valve. I tested my valve and it is not holding vacuum.

If that is the way you are running your jeep then the EGR valve is closed all the time. The valve I have is closed, but applying vacuum does not open it. That is the problem.
