I'm in Nj the company is called Personal Service Insurance out of PA I'm only paying 120 a month of liability and for a "New" driver (I'm 19) in nj that a pretty good deal.. I attempted to fight them on that but they mailed my the "contract" I signed where in the bull **** fine print it stated they will not offer coverage on cars 25 years and up

I bought a 98 after extensive research. Wikipedia has a listing of all the changes year-to-year in the cherokees.
The biggest thing is the head. If you're buying a used vehicle, one that'll likely have greaer than 100000 miles on it, it's pretty important.
In 99 they started using the flawed ones, and yeah, anyone might lie about their fix-job, and even if it was fixed properly, you can't get better than the origional straight-six was from the factory. Some guys are squeaking 350000 out of theirs with proper oil changes, and not beating on it. I have over 200000 and am going strong.
Further, 97-98 is the year they made a lot of cosmetic upgrades. Not to sound all Nancy wth it, the mirrors look better, they're electric, they have the coveted 2nd cup-holder, etc, etc.
On a whole, the best thing about a cherokee though, is the fact they're relatively easy to work on and fix if something does go wrong. {Even leaving it stock} Especially with the willing help of jeep junkies like the one's on this site. Nowhere else in the world can you make a "my car's broke" post at 330 am, and have 25 posts/answers to "why" or "what to do to fix it" by 9 am that morning.
Also, since they're older, and AMERICAN made, the parts are cheaper and easier to find. Nothing bonds a parent and a kid like a weekend walk through a junk yard to find some extra parts for your baby. Not to mention, no dad's cooler than the one who bought you a 3-inch lift kit for your birthday, spent time helping you put it on, then went out offroading with you!
Ahhhh- sweet memories!
Good luck, check your car-fax, and welcome to the addiction!
