Default Lost 5th and reverse

Hi I have a 1984 XJ with 5-speed and V6. After driving through a construction zone at 30 km/h I discovered we lost 5th. The shifter will go in but not engage. I also found that there is no reverse, (I can hear the grinding spinning but not engaging). Both 5th and reverse throws are at the top right and bottom right location on the stick.

Any suggestions would be appreciated,

Thanks,

Joah

5th and reverse are on the same shift rod in the tail housing. I can't say for sure without taking it apart, but it could be as simple as the set screw on the shift fork coming loose. The only way to fix it is to remove the transfer case and tail housing in any case regardless of cause

Yup. What he said. Good time to get a look at other things in there too if for nothing else but peace of mind.

I'll definitely be investing in a transmission jack this time around!

I finally got around to repairing this. So I have the transfer case removed, how do I remove the tail housing?

Should I remove the transmission or attempt to fix from underneath the vehicle??

It will be much easier to do it with the tranny out.

The bell housing bolts on the front of the tranny, but I don't know if the input shaft is the same for both

That's the number on transmission. The gentleman says we can have everything for free just have to take everything (engine is blown).

Having read everything online, the T5 is not a good transmission to rebuild as it is light duty. Will this transmission be better? Yes as we had one in another jeep. Will it fit in our old 1984 Cherokee? We don't know. There are electrical connections on the transmission and the transfer case.

Looks to be an AX-5. Assuming that's a 2.5L or a 2.8/3.4L engine it's bolted to (had the GM 60-degree/metric bellhousing pattern), I'm pretty sure it will work.

That is the shaft in the front that goes into the clutch. They are not all the same across car brands
