The parts dept at my work cuts keys for free it you buy it from them and the is no charge to looking up the key code by the vin.

I think the chip is probably the reason for the big difference in prices.

Mine's not chipped.

What year did they start that on Cherokees, anyway?

Chips? Are you talking about Sentry Key Immobilzer System transponder keys (chip keys)? I think that POS system started in '98.

My '99 does not have a immobilizer on it.

OP, have you gone to the dealership yet?

I do not have the Sentry Key Immobilzer on my 98; however, there were a few pages literally glued into the owners manual with procedures you need to know if you have that system.

That would have been an update Chrysler sent out after the manual was printed/Jeep was sold.

It's funny. All the stuff is online now but some of the old service books are like that when there is an update in info or a tsb.

FOLLOW UP:

  1. One phone call to the dealer to verify they can do it.
  2. One stop at the dealer with driver's license, registration, and VIN.
  3. 3 keys made at $6.25 each.

Yeah, that works!

Thanks all!
