lost my lifter tick, and gained some pep back in my 4.0!

so the jeep is due for some new oil, so i ventured out today picked up some supplies...rotella 5w-40, a new mopar filter.
in preparation for the oil change i figured i would also get some marvel mystery oil to remove any accumulated gunk.
and since my engine bay was absolutely filthy, i picked up some purple power.
went to the car wash, used the entire bottle of p. power under the hood, and in the engine bay. hosed it off, and now i'm not ashamed to let people see the 4.0!
put about half the bottle of MMO into the crankcase for the drive home
about 5 minutes into my drive home i noticed a couple of things....first the persistant tick of the valvetrain was not making any noise, and second, the throttle response is back, acceleration is smooth, and the overall noise of the jeep is less.
perhaps its just coincidence, or maybe the MMO loosened up some gunk internally that was blocking oil passages or something.
the other thing i thought of, is maybe de-gunking the motor on the outside made some difference. i have heard that in order for 02 sensors to work properly, they need to sense the ambient air through small holes on the outside of the sensor.....perhaps those were clogged??
it seems that my gas mileage is back to normal, it has really been sucking down the fuel lately....
and its wierd to not have the constant audible tick from the motor, as well as it not sounding like a diesel!!!

I habitually use MMO by carefully squirting some down the throttle body from one of those adjustable-nozzle squirt bottles; it works well to clean away valve and combustion chamber deposits.
I agree that sludge and gunk can cause that annoying lifter ticking. Because the engine is SO susceptible to lifter noises, I wonder whether the oil passages were designed smaller than they should be?
Anyway, mine is a '93, 4.0 HO, 90K. I bought it from a retiree; it was not very well maintained. It ticked but not real bad. I tried using thicker oil and STP; this made the noise MUCH worse. It sounded like a bad rod knock.
Something told me to try using only the factory-specified 10W-30 oil and the problem slowly but consistently went away. Between highway driving, (which the retiree never did) and the lighter oil, it must have cleaned out the majority of the crap in the oil passage and lifters. Now it is very quiet.

Great info on engine oil gents. I used 5-30 since i have owned the machine but this last change i used 10--40 recommended by the guy behind the counter. Now i am thinking that the factory 5-30w is the way to go.
