For the love of all things holy, what is causing this sound?
98 XJ stock! Volume up please--> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=97x0...ature=youtu.be
Sound is only audible when <15mph, mostly when braking which made me think it could be brake related, but I hear it sometimes rolling slow without brakes applied, just not as loud. Doesn't matter if I'm turning or headed straight.
Seems to be under front driver side floor area/isolated to the driver side wheel area, but I'm thinking it's drive train/dana 30 front diff related now after the following....
I have new:
- brake rotors and pads on both front wheels.
-Driver side axle shaft u joint replaced today,
-driver side wheel bearing/hub assembly,
-driver side knuckle (long story)
-entire new exhaust (not hitting cross member)
-not the diff breather tube smacking what it shouldn't
I was hopeful, but those pieces didn't fix it. My upper ball joint is tight on driver side, lower is a little loose. Same for tie rod end there. I haven't torn into the passenger side yet.
Speaking to someone who is entirely learning from the ground up how these Jeeps work, for dummies-- can you please help me isolate the noise? If we can troubleshoot it I'd be happy. When I lift the front and spin the wheels I can't produce the sound. It seems to be load dependent???
I've posted this before on FB XJ pages and it's crickets...
Thanks in advance!

Jack it up on all fours and run it to see if it reveals itself.
How are you jacking up the front such that it is not load-dependent?
Tire out of round?
Do you have ABS?

Hi guys, thanks. Let's see.
-New motor mounts/trans mount three years ago
-No loose screwdrivers in center console
-Tires were new three years ago
-No ABS
-If I'm recalling correct been happening as long as I've owned it (3 years), and still after a lot of maintenance items, but only now finally starting to touch front steering/suspension stuff. I'll probably go ahead and replace pass axle ujoint and wheel bearing, if only for the sake of pairs and curiosity, I have the parts and know how now to get that done faster.
When I lift the front I mean to say jack stands on both sides of front axle to get both front tires off the ground. When I spin them by hand there's no sound I can tell, maybe theyre not going fast enough. If it would help to get all four off the ground and give it some gas/brake and have someone listen? I'm not familiar enough with the workings here. If I remove the front driveshaft would that help isolate? I can't think what might be wrong in the caliper to cause this. I did have a very wobbly brake pad but bent the clips out and it's snug now.
Keep ideas coming please.

Old fart with a wrench
Now that you mention it, the center splines on the front driveshaft could be worn enough to throw off-center and cause a vibration, but just enough to feel it yet. Case in point, when I bought my 89 Chevy 4x4, the front shaft was behind the seat. When I put it on, it would shake the whole front end! I bought a replacement which cured the problem. Try taking your shaft out and see if the noise goes away.
