Just turned 242,000 miles on a 96 2WD Sport. I'm changing the transmission mount because it's shot (ATF fluid soaked and mushed). While I'm busting knuckles should I assume the rubber on the main mounts has age-hardened and change them as well?

Yes, you should change the engine mounts too if they are old. Get the MOPAR mounts and save yourself the headaches of having to replace low quality mounts later on.
Replace the engine mounts first, then the transmission mount.
When you are doing the engine mounts, release the nuts inside the crossmember for the transmission, so the engine can move around while you line up the engine mounts.
And don't jack up the front of the Jeep like the FSM says. It just makes it harder to reach for the engine mounts.

on every vehicle I have had to change engine mounts, the LH is much more damaged. This cant just be heat as on an I6 XJ as it also has been on V config engines
It can only be that the LH one is compressed, and the RH is under tension...you would think it would work the other way around
anyway, the RH is dead easy on an XJ, the LH takes more time
