Most people use the '95 FSM. '97 was a big jump away from the '96 wicked ways.

 

Hi All,

I just got my first Cherokee a 1996 in the perfect forest green. However, it turns out is a bit of a lemon and I could really use the owners manual if anyone still has the link to it.

Also if anyone can point me in the direction of a thread or website that shows how to remove/replace the frame on the drivers side I would really appreciate it. The guy that sold it to me had done a really nice job of covering the very extensive rust on the frame. He had filled it with expandable foam then shaped body filler to match the original profile and covered it in some waterproof rubber substance so it looked really clean. It wasn't until the mechanic stuck a screw driver through it that I found out that the whole driver side frame is rusted though badly it multiple places.

Any help or ideas would be much appreciated.

 

Hello, I was given a 1996 jeep cherokee classic by one of my mom's friend that she constantly help by driving. I was so excited when I got it but I already replaced the alternator, waterpump,thermostat, 2 rear tires, all brakes, headliner, upper speakers, all shocks, oil and filter. This is love at first drive. This jeep have only 83700 miles and I got it running smoothly so far. I don't have any manual on this jeep and I don't know if I have power locks. I just got home handed 2 keys. Windows are manual. I sure would like any help with manuals and knowledge.

See Kens post above. He's pretty sharp. Stuff changed in 96 I gather. The 95 FSM sounds like your best shot.

I'd hazard a guess that if the windows are manual the locks are also, but don't know. The manual might not tell you what you have, I'd think there would be some switch for power locks. Fram, the orange can of death, is the worst filter. Napa gold is a Wix, one good choice.

 

I downloaded the 95 FSM off of Greatlakesxj.com before the site went TU. I also got the factory parts manual there as well. Got both for free. It has pretty much all you will need for a 96. So far the only thing I've seen different is the power steering pump but that's been the only thing under the hood that I've had an issue with. The mount is different.

The 95 manual is pretty useful for the 96 year. I used the 95 and 97 FSMs quite a bit for a while. Especially on hardware related items (suspension, steering, engine accessories, etc.). However, the wiring, switches, and connector pinouts changed for many components on the 96, so if you are the type that depends on wiring diagrams with accurate connector diagrams, pinouts, switch behavior, wire routing, colors, sizes, connections, splices, etc. Then you'll eventually want to find a 96 FSM. I finally decided to bite the bullet and found a paper copy online. It was not cheap.

it would be good to know what they consider the break point based on the brass oval plate on the firewall

 

I'd honestly go on eBay to grab one... they're pretty common.

 

For a 96 (the Transition ) use the 95 FSM and for electrics use the 97 FSM both on Great lakes that's what I had to do to solve a disaster which involved diagnosing and replacing a 96 PCM

I never did find a true digital version of the 96 FSM online. I ended up purchasing a paper copy from some random business/website that specializes in collecting older manuals.

 

They are a tad pricey imo, but there a couple hard copies on ebay right now. Make sure you get one for an XJ, not the Grand Cherokee. You can buy a cd version which costs much less, but i dont use them, so i dont know how complete they are.

Some get by using manuals for a 95 and 97 as the 96 model year is a mix of the two.
