Given that most of the ones I have found are autos, I figure I'll wind up with an auto. If there was a reason for me to specifically look for a manual I would but if it isn't a big reliability issue I'll take an auto if that's what I find.

yeah if your even thinking about which one then it dont matter....i only looked for a manual....and when I wrecked it I bought an auto and made it manual...so thats my preffy

Honestly it's whatever you feel like driving more. if your gonna be stuck in traffic all the time you will probably want an automatic. I like the extra control a 5 speed gives you off road but both do fine.

Plus the AW4 cannot be killed. One of the best transmissions ever. I was a little heart broken when I bought my truck & it was a stick.

i dont know tho, cause maybe auto is better on the big rocks???

I have an auto and my son has a manual XJ and they are both good. Here is my take on the advantages of each.

Auto: Much better in city traffic, is less likely to spin out when launching(torque conveter), can be converted to manual automatic (with switch), easier to locate an xj with auto than a manual.

Manual: Gives complete control to driver, allows slow movement w/o pushing gas pedal (foot free operation), can push start, often gives a little better fuel economy, no need for an aux trans cooler.

There are some pros for each. I hope this helps!
