I believe the OP said he ran 12V direct to the fan and it runs.

Ya I read that. I was wanting him to test if the efan was getting voltage to turn on is what I'm asking. I was trying to ask you if the newer XJ's use a relay on the coolant side of the fan.

If there is a relay it never sent the power to the efan, or it would have ran, testing it to straight 12v verified the fan works. Just not sure why it's not coming on at the correct temp. I do not have the scanner, it was a friend's, so I'd have to try and see if I can borrow it, or have him come over and hook it up to verify the temp. It just shot from the marl after 210 to the red... which was weird and terrifying, ha ha

Would the coolant temp sensor have anything to do with the ac problem if it were bad?

Again, the coolant temp sensor in the t-stat cover could be bad.

The coolant temp has nothing to do with the a/c compressor not engaging. The CTS signals the ECU.....at 223F coolant temp the ECU signals/turns on the efan.

On '97 up XJs, the ECU also tells the temp gauge needle (and other gauge needles) where to point.

The efan relay is in the PDC.

That's to be expected with just about any 15 year old vehicle.

So if the efan does not turn on, say maybe its the relay, could that cause the compressor to not turn on? What should I do next, test relays?

Here's the fuse layout in the '00 and '01 XJ PDC. The relays are identified on the cover of the PDC.

Note the 40 Amp RAD FAN fuse. And the 20 Amp COMP CLUTCH fuse.

Hm... the fuses behind my fuse door on the passenger side don't look like that.. is there more hidden behind the panel?

Right church, wrong pew. You need to look in the Power Distribution Center (PDC) in the engine bay. A black box fastened to the passenger side inner fender.
