Mechanical fan to Electric conversion question
Hey, so the other day I was driving to corvallis and my power stearing went out. I stopped in a near by parking lot and found that my mechanical fan was WAY LOOSE! like I could move it up, down, all around, in and out. So I took out the bracket and low and behold the bearings blew up! I was going to replace it with a OEM replacement bracket, but I was thinking, if I am going to ever do a mechanical fan to electric fan conversion, this would be the time. So I was wondering what fans other people have used for this conversion. I know the least amount of cfm that the fan can put out is 2500 and the best would be around 3000 cfm's. Im just wondering what fans others have used. If you could help me out that would be great!

Dirtbound Offroad has a great kit. ~4000cfm, shroud, temp controller, etc. Not too pricey either. Other options are fans from certain audis, two stock xj electric fans, the ferd taurus fan, stuff like that. search a bit and you can see what people are doing.

DualSportDad, could you elaborate a little more on your setup? I was thinking about doing the same... Which controller and what did you set it at? Since we're both here in FL what kind of temps do you see at idle in traffic?

I"m running electrical fans on mine. I used fans fron a 86 audi 4000s and were the paecock goes , found a fan switch which screws on there with tempature of on at 190f and off at 175f. Also turns on automatically when a/c compressor turns on. Works great

I have the DBO triple fan kit with their controller, works great.
You will need to replace the OEM bracket anyways to get good belt wrap on the alt pulley. Maybe upgrade/relocate the alt while you're at it. Unless AC is a MUST for you. If you get the DBO kit it comes with replacement bolts for the mech fan pulley.

Yes I have ac and my temp gauge stays a little below 210 at all times. This is my only car so it sees everything from stop and go traffic to slow trail rides and it doesn't skip a beat. Its a great setup, I really don't know why people bother doing more elaborate fan setups.

Hmm I was sitting waiting for a work shift to start for probably a good 20 min with ac on and my idiot over heat light kicked on maybe I should look into this. 96 xj 4.0 h.o.
I have the stock electronic fan and the clutch fan. Might look into just getting another fan and change the thermostat

How long has it been since any and what kind of cooling system maintenance has been done? Seems like your location would still be having cool ambient temps. If overheating in cool weather, sounds like some major cooling system maintenance is needed. Unless u like draining/refilling the cooling system multiple times, don't guess at what components u think may need replacing. The entire XJ cooling system is less than $250 in parts, including a new rad.
