I'd almost bet money it's not the t-stat causing overheat.

I replaced the mechanical fan with one from JEGS, part 555-52130
It is a 10 inch fan so it fitter pretty good on the radiator, wired it in parallel with the stock auxiliary fan
No issues at all, worked really well and the clearance was perfect, I can take a picture of the final setup if you are interested on this idea.

Doesn't matter what I think it is......I don't know. The facts r, u've got a 17 year old vehicle with well over a 100K miles and my guess is u have no clue of what maintenance the PO did, since no list of maintenance was in your posts. Again, unless u like replacing one item at a time, having multiple down times and doing multiple coolant drain/refills, just replace the entire cooling system (<$250 in parts) at once and eliminate the guess work. The XJ cooling system (or any 17 year old vehicle for that matter) is not something u want to guess at/neglect if it's to be ones reliable daily driver.

Gotcha you do have a good point. I do have a binder full of maint records and sure enough the cooland has been flushed twice once at 30k and once at 70k a few years ago so its over due. In YOUR opinion would you stick a new radiator on it? Ive nevet had issues with the open circuit radiators in jeeps but I could be mistaken.

We replaced the entire cooling system on our '98 (including radiator) after we bought it with only 42K miles. I joined this forum about a month before we purchased our XJ. After lots of reading in this forum prior to our purchase, I learned the XJ cooling system is not something u want to neglect.....if it ain't broke, don't fix it, does not apply to the XJ cooling system. Git 'er done......u'll sleep better.

Thanks for the Input will do. Onto another cooling question for you. Did you get another radiator that the transmission hooks up to or just did a aux cooler?

We bought a OE style replacement rad for a auto tranny from AutoZone. We also run a auxiliary tranny cooler (B&M 70264) inline with and after the rad cooler.
