Ok so I might buy a 1993 Cherokee but it needs a water pump and radiator.
The pump is seized, but I wanted to make sure it started, so cut the belt and it started right up ran good. I let it run for a few mins and shut it off. I then tried to restart and it would just crank and crank but never start. Just curious to what may cause this symptom. Could it be because the there is no coolant going though the engine?

No coolant won't cause the no start. I suspect the battery is too low to handle the duties of turning the engine over, power the fuel pump, and supply the ignition with enough voltage. Or it may be out of gas. How long has this vehicle sat?

+1 without the belt the battery was not recharged, you just drained the last of it. Most likely. Like Bustedback said if it's been sitting for however long there could be a lot of other issues too, ignition components gave up, air in the fuel line, etc

I used a good battery I brought along that was holding a charge fine. I would suspect the battery if it wasn't cranking. But it was cranking great. I know the coolant temp sensor controls lean/rich so I figured it could just cause a no start.

Nope it's only involved in fuel trim. XJs will run with most sensors unplugged. Very poorly, but they'll run.

Thanks for the input I was wondering if it was just trim. Sounds like there is another problem then. Bummer.

Well maybe maybe not... you heard it run. If it ran well the problem is likely not the end of the world. If it's cheap and rust-free that's all I can ask for lol

Is it possible that it could be the CPS? Crank, no start... and the Jeep ran for a while... don't CPSs sometimes work fine and then when they get warmed up they won't work? I just don't know if it would get warmed up just idling in park

Yeah. If it ran well when it was running it's going to be something electrical or electronic.

If you do buy it plan on replacing the cam and crank sensors just as cheap insurance.

Yes, just cycle the key on off on off on and count the flashes on 91-95 Jeeps.
