That 30mpg trip was a freak occurrence. But 20-25mpg was NOT uncommon on this trip. Have you guys ever seen eastern north dakota/ western minnesota? It's flat, no hills. Drive your jeep at a constant speed/rpm for hours and see what you end up with.

I get around 400 miles per tank, usually. I put gas in it soon after the light comes on...which equates to 16.5-17 gal. I've put as much as 19.6 in it. I average 21-23 mpg. highway and ac use both hurt my mpg. I didn't buy it to save fuel so I quit tracking my mpg awhile ago.

After replacing every sensor (TPS, IAC, CPS, MAP o2.. is that all?), new injectors (Ford swap), new FPR, and entirely new exhaust system I began with around 16mpg (first fillup with the Jeep). The next fillup I got 17mpg. After that, 18mpg. Then 19, then it jumped to 21 mpg. I've only filled it up 5 times so it's still learning. I would be shocked if it goes any higher but I'm happy with 19-21 mixed. Very happy. Stock tires and 240k miles on the clock. It'll go down when I put 31's on, I'm sure.

Thanks. I'm not looking for a super high mpg vehicle. But under 13 or so means that the engine is not running well.
Will be picking up an o2 sensor today, as well as a brake master cylinder, so will have some work to do this week. Hopefully that will bring my mileage up this week before I head out of town this weekend. Its a pretty short trip (about 150 miles one way) so It should give me a really good run down of the MPG.

For those who don't track MPG, you should. It can tell you if something's wrong that doesn't affect its running condition much.

Oh, I've done a tune up. I've put a lot of time and $$ into my jeep so far, My $500 heep has cost me close to 1800 in repairs alone... but it had a failed/plugged catalytic converter, so I am thinking the o2 sensor is fouled up.

I've had screwy gauges in both my XJs. My 89 was lifted around 4" on 31s and could get anywhere from 300-600 miles per tank depending on weather conditions (based on MPGs between fill ups). My 90 is stock and would be hard pressed to go more than 450 miles per tank. Since the gauge is iffy for empty I try not to push it though, 300 miles is usually what I get once the gas light comes on ( not actually that empty though).
I need to get me one of those.

As far as MPG it was never anything I gave much thought to, I do everything there is to do other than a new engine (coming soon) then it is what it is. I bought my XJ for 90% off road use the other 10% is driving to a few areas that I don't trailer it to for off roading. Since I changed gears (33" tires) to 5.56's the mpg did increase from the stock 3.55 from 13.3 to 15.80. This is VG mpg considering what I pull around IMO.
In fact my DD 04 ZJ only gets 18.9 mpg as its full time 4WD but that is great as it has every creature comfort made and 100% working order.
I use to tow my XJ and trailer as it has the 4.7HO motor with towing package.

[QUOTE=RTorrez1;2880581 But when some one says they get 600 per tank.... They are either high, can't do math or just in there own little world that they see only what they want to see. 600 mile per tank will never happen in and XJ!!![/QUOTE]
Looks like everyone's been brainwashed here..... Anything out of the ordinary and the guy's apparently an idiot. If you guys would have read my first post entirely, you would have seen that it was a long flat drive with a 40mph tailwind. I suppose I was wrong that my stocker got 27mpg on that same trip? Or several trips at 25+mpg in three different XJs?

If it makes someone feel good to tell their story of fairy tale hypermiling MPG's in an XJ then go for it. To me that's just not interesting or believable. Now, if you want to tell your tale of how your XJ performed in hellish conditions, that gets my attention. An XJ is a beast in bad conditions. If you want to talk MPG's the folks at the Prius forum are all ears.

Hey now, Play nice!
Anyways, filled up last night. per my calculations, got about 14.5mpg on that tank, up from the 12.9 I had gotten with the previous fill up. also mileage app on my phone for the first time. It will take a few fill ups for it to be useful.

I have a bone stock 2001 XJ 2WD. Average city, I get roughly 225-250 miles on a tank. Road trips, I get anywhere between 300-350 on a tank depending on road conditions, inclines, speed, etc.
I don't think that 25MPG is unreasonable, I've gotten that quite a few times using the fill up/divide by trip odometer method.

Are you accounting for the bigger tires? I forget if you said anything before
