Default Misc Electrical problems

I just purchased my first Jeep this week. A 1998 that has spent it's life in upstate NY and has the rust to prove it.

I have a number of electrical issues and need a suggestion on where to start. Here is all the problems.

1. Electric door lock switch does not work on the passenger door, but when you open the door the electric locks lock.
2. None of the electric window switches work except for the one in the drivers door. Three of the four windows will roll down using the master control.
3. Interior lights come on when you open the doors, except for the driver door.
4. Key fob will lock the doors, but does not unlock.
5. Speakers in passenger door do not work.

Also have the check engine light on (code P 0138) and purchased an O2 Sensor to put on it tomorrow and hoping that it is not being triggered by the electrical issues. Have about a week to get rid of the light to have the vehicle inspected.

Any thoughts on where to start fixing the electrical issues?

That black rubber thing when you open the door is a door sock.Pull that apart and resplice the broken wires together and most of your problems will be fixed. After time the wires break from getting bent in the door jamb and break.I had the same prob with my ZJ and now everything works.Good luck.

I pulled the boot off and most of the door apart. I can see the likely problem, but it is right where the wires leave the truck body. There is no play for me to work on them. How do I access from the inside? Have to pull the fuse box?

I just cut them and spliced on more wire.

Ok. I took the whole door apart and took the plastic housing around the fuse box off. Pulled the wiring harness back into the body so I could get to it. Found an obvious short in one of the wires. Traced it back to find where it went expecting it to be the lock. It's for the blanking speaker!!

The speaker hasn't been working, so I fixed the wire and testing it and now the speaker works. Inspected all the other wires and could not find any other problems. I tried testing the locks with the harness where it was but it would not work without being plugged into some of the spots.

Put everything back together and the speaker still works, but neither side electric lock works. I plugged the lock switch in last and when I did the doors all locked, but didn't do anything else.

Pulled out the trusty repair manual to look at the wiring diagram only to find that my year is not in the book!!

I need some suggestions. Here is what is still wrong with the electrical.

Drivers door works (master) except for the electric lock now and the back right window. None of the individual doors work. No electric window or lock (only on the drivers and front passenger). Interior lights come on when you open the doors, except for the drivers door.

After looking at everything, I think a previous owner might have tampered with some of the wiring trying to hook up some additional sound system elements.

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks.

check the switch that locks out the individual door controls for the windows. it may have gone bad and is stuck on altho it appears to be off. this would only allow the drivers controls to work.

Maybe, but the driver side door lock isn't working either.

Ok, I finally just decided to pull the whole wiring harness from the passenger door and spread it out on the table to look it over. I found where the previous owner had tried to rewire the speaker and it still had a short. Fixed it and then went over everything else. Found one wire that had a split, wire had turned green and was not making a connection. Spliced a new peice of wire in and will give it a try in the morning.

I did notice tonight for the first time (first time I worked on it at night) that the window switches on all the doors except the driver do not have the little green light on it. I get that gives a clue as to where to look for the wiring problem. Anybody know? What does it mean to not have the lights on the switches?

Would this cause the lights to not work on the switches?

Don't know if the lights are working on the switches, but I pulled the wiring harness out of the drivers side door and repaired seven wires. Now all but one window will work from the drivers door and all the windows work from the controls in the individual doors.

Guessing a switch issue from the drivers door on the one window since I checked all the wires with a volt meter before reinstalling.

So two wires in the passenger door and seven in the drivers and I am ready to go. Except for the door switch on the drivers door, fixing the hinges on the drivers door, replacing the electric cooling fan, new alternator, drivers seat, working on that low oil pressure, etc. etc.

Does this ever end? Maybe I didn't get such a good deal.

Ok. So I am stratching my head again. Over the last couple of days I pulled the wiring harness out of both front doors, fixed all the wires with shorts, used a volt meter to check all the wire. Everything seemed to be working right.

Got in it tonight to take drop off the baby sitter and now the front speakers are not working. If I fiddle with the radio they will cut in and out and when the passenger door was opened I heard that speaker crakle.

I feel like I took care of the doors hanesses. Do I pull these back out and look again or should I check somewhere else first?
