Motor Shutting off, Replaced CPS
In the last week I've been stressed with my motor shutting off when I slow down driving... the lights stay on so its not the batt. or alt. There's tons of threads on this and suggestions abounded that it was the crank position sensor. I ordered the part, and with minor trauma and in the freezing rain, I replaced it (no joke for a total amateur). Started up just fine. Put it in reverse to back out the driveway. Shuts off just like before.
Frustrated I restarted it and drove onto work without any other choice. Its now shut off on me 4 or 5 times in the last week, but for the most part it runs fine--it only happens rarely when I'm slowing down to turn or stop... is there anything else ya'll think might be giving me these troubles? Perhaps bad wiring?

Ug! So sorry man. Yea, that first CPS sucks. You got a light on? You know the auto parts or someone, (a lube shop), might read your codes free.
Then OBD means "on board diagnostics" . Up till 96-97 this might help..
OBD1 Models: 1991-1995
1) Start engine (if possible). Move transmission shift lever
through all positions, ending in Park. Turn A/C switch on and then off
(if equipped).
2) Turn engine off. Without starting engine again, turn
ignition on, off, on, off and on within 5 seconds. Record 2-digit
fault codes as displayed by flashing MIL.
3) For example, fault code 23 is displayed as flash, flash,
4-second pause, flash, flash, flash. After a slightly longer pause,
other codes stored are displayed in numerical order. When MIL begins
to flash fault codes, it cannot be stopped. Start over if count is
lost. Code 55 indicates end of fault code display.
The IAC might be something to clean...Idk..OH! and check for vacuum leaks. Any hissing or hoses wrong?
Hopefully a non renix guy will show up...

Clean the whole throttle body out, take it off and take out all the sensors and clean everything in it, all the holes too....sounds like a dirty IAC solenoid.
May I ask what caused you to jump straight to CPS? That causes it to shut off and not restart or not start at all....don't think I've ever heard of one shut a jeep off and be easily restarted, they usually kill it, and the jeep is dead where it's parked til its fixed...Good luck man shouldn't be too hard, If you take the intake hose off and look in the throttle body and there is any black or its dirty at all, take it off and clean it

I would agree that a thorough cleaning of the throttle body and idle air control would be a good idea.
Another not-so-mainstream idea if this happens only when you are idling is a marginal battery. Just because your lights stay on does not rule out the battery as a suspect. How old is yours? And before you even ask, yes.....you absolutely can have a battery that is plenty strong enough to start the engine, but marginal enough to give the engine management system fits. Stalling is a very common cause for a marginal battery. Have your battery "load tested" at any parts store. Load testing is the only accurate way of determining battery condition.

My friends 96 would shut off randomly and he changed the coil,Cps and was still doin it. The last thing we changed was the cam shaft sensor in the distributor and solved the problem. He hasn't had an issue since.

That's not the first time I've seen IAC solenoid as the possible culprit. I don't know anything about that or what it does so its something I'm gonna research. I've got a Haynes manual, a stockpile of tools and this forum.

Pete. I did notice the 94 there. Tom...call it a "learning curve". I still don't get the alt holding at 14 ish, and having a battery issue running. My "view" is a bit myopic though! (hermit issues). If there is 13+ on the meter, ...I still haven't "wrapped my head" around how that battery is an issue...
V-Go..did you try the "key trick?"....
CPS can do anything you can imagine. Failing hot then working again cooler, or working after being unplugged and re plugged are in there, reported...
