New to this forum, have some questions and Im hoping you can help because my main area's of expertise are C-130's and Honda's... So anyways, Before my buddy left for the desert he gave me his 91 Cherokee Laredo 4.O inline 6 5 speed (nice guy) It has some mods like lift, tires, etc. It also has a shortblock he dropped in there about 4 years ago, so its not very old with probably only 40k miles on it. And im looking for another jeep that i can throw on the road to haul my family around in and have something for bad weather. I would throw the 91 on the road but the body is pretty beat along with the interior. My plan is to buy a jeep in good shape body wise and swap in the newer motor from my buddies jeep into the one i will buy because of low miles and all. My question is what other jeep models can i swap this into? Im leaning towards something in between 95-98 body style 4.0 laredo but im not sure if that will work. Plus I dont know if a motor off of a manual setup (my buddies old jeep) will bolt up to the auto tranny if thats what i end up buying. Your help/experience in this matter would be very appreciated. Thanks

Welcome. Staying in the 91 to 96 years would be simpler, but up through 99, and maybe later, can be done.

Would the problem with swapping into a 97-99 be OBD issues/compatibility?. Im assuming that a 4.0 from 91 would have all the same engine mount styles/plugs/bolt patterns as a 98 with a 4.0 but I am probably wrong... Just thinking that the 1990-9 4.0 straight 6's would generally be the same.

Yeah, this is my first motor swap with a jeep. I guess its safe to say that i could atleast mount the donor motor in the newer jeep and then troubleshoot the rest (sensors, etc)as I go along. First I have to find a replacement jeep haha. But can I bolt up a motor that came off of a manual tranny onto an auto tranny?

So easy even an A&P Mechanic can do it, j/k.... Like cruiser said 91-95 is a plug-n-play, but the 91 can go into a 96+, you would have to swap the sensors, and the power steering bracket from the newer model to the older engine. I put a '93 engine in a '99 body. It was really easy.
