mpg for 4.0/auto
any good guesses on realistic mpg for a xj or grand w/ a 4 liter and auto, used as daily driver? a buddy wants to get one to replace his minivan(aaarrgghh!) for everyday use- he's a super for a county home health/housekeeping organization, lotsa miles a week- local chrystler- yes, christler dealer told him 4.0's are unreliable, poor mileage, BS,BS,BS....nothing like not making a sale, used or not- i think they've got too many calibers, dakotas, etc to palm off after the CARS program- i bought our last xj from the same clowns- an 84 that the owners kids used as a lake toy- talk about crapping where you eat. any realistic figures???

4.0 mpg
This summer I picked up a stock 2000 4.0 4X4 with 16 inch P235X16 tires and 133,000 miles. Computer overhead gave it 9 mpg overall. I replaced transmission, engine, front and rear diff's with Amsoil lube/oil and added a K&N air filter then put 4,450 miles from Florida to Rocky Mountains and back doing some 4wheeling. I now use it as a 60 mile daily rider and average 20.5 town/highway. I get a low of 18 and high of 23 at 70 and 2100 rpm. I am still trying to get the fill bolt loose on the transfer case, drain is fine but someone partly stripped the top and it seems rusted in. Any ideas out there?

My 95 ZJ 4.0 and auto can get me 23 MPG average. I'm really wanting a 6 speed manual... 2" BB over Upcountry springs. So we could just say three inches. Rolling 31s. Key is to adjust the nut behind the wheel. Anybody can get 40+ in a Prius. But keeping 20+ AVERAGE in a lifted ZJ takes work. Easy on the gas up to speed (no need to be a grandma...). Give plenty of distance between you and cars ahead, so you can limit braking and speeding back up. Try to manage your speed with a light throttle foot. Minimize braking, if in town, drive the freeways as much as possible. DO NOT SPEED!
I've seen 23s, but usually get about 20 on average. 4 wheeling kills my mileage. So any tank that I've been wheeling on doesn't get measured. Keep the rig well maintained, use synthetic gear lubes and oils. Make sure your front end is aligned correctly. I keep my tires inflated to 35 most of the time. I know the hardcore FE guys go as high as 50. Not me. THough in my Neon I get 36 on average while carpooling over a mountain pass with 4 good sized people in it. I keep the tires on that at 40 psi. I've seen 38s with it.
It is all about adjusting the nut behind the wheel... It is worth repeating. Just relax and slow down a bit. Easy on the throttle, limited braking.

My XJ just ticked over 189k and with regular maintenance, I am still getting 18/19 city and 20/23 highway. I run lucas products, including trans fluid, and gear oil in the diffs. I am running on 237/75/15's with the original drivetrain (nothing rebuilt or overhauled) and am more than satisfied with its capabilities. I do not have any of the more hardcore trails near me so most of the wheeling that I have done has been light to moderate.

I have 2 96 Cherokee's both rolling 31's. One is all stock drive train etc and gets around 18-19 mpg.
The other has cold air intake with a K&N filter, Borla header, free flow cat, and Flowmaster muff. It gets 16-17 mpg.

Have access to a airhammer? I bet that would knock it loose. Thats what I use to get off all the rusted nuts and bolts.

I just bought a '95 that is unusual in the fact that it has 138,000 miles of not only maintenance logs but fuel logs as well. I'll try to un cipher the fuel entries and report. I think it may have belonged to a rural route mail carrier or something. A cursory glance does not indicate outstanding mileage, but that would be the nature of delivering the mail, no?

I've got a 99' XJ with 107K 4.0 auto that's pretty stock. I commute 80 miles daily mostly on country roads with a short stretch on the highway for about 5 miles. I pull a good incline the whole way to work (it's about 3k feet difference in elevation from the house). Anyway i average about 20mpg consistently and on trips get closer to 22 at 75mph with the ac on and all seats full. Oh and just for the utilatarian I averaged 16 mpg on a 600 mile trip pulling a 5x10 trallier loaded both ways with 5 in the Jeep and the cargo area full. it was about 1700 lbs of trailer wieght and 700 lbs extra in the Jeep.
