Default Muffler Placement

I am having my 2.5" inch exhaust done next week and would like to know if I should put the muffler before the axle or after.
I have heard that if it is after the axle it can sound a bit ricey.
I am debating on using
FLOWMASTER 40 Series MUFFLER 2.5" CENTER IN - DUAL 2.5" OUT
or
FLOWMASTER SUPER 44 MUFFLER 2.5" CENTER IN - DUAL 2.5" OUT

I am looking for performance but Mostly Sound and looks.
I don't want the Jeep so damned loud that when I am going on a trip for a few hours that I have to pop my ears the rest of the day or have to repeat myself to everyone when talking.
I wouldn't mind a nice rumble on acceleration but I don't want a noisy inside.

If mufflers are closer to the engine will it be quieter or if their further away?

Not sure how you plan to fit the muffler behind the axle. The gas tank and leaf springs are in the way. Your only option is the stock location.

distance from motor doesnt matter and the only place it will fit is between the crossmember and rear axle

Just wondering, if you don't want a loud muffler, why are you looking at loud mufflers? JMO instead of having an exhaust made up wait until dynomax runs their cat back special again. $75 & 20 minute install your done. It's not loud but you'll know it's there.

"Performance muffler" is just a marketing ploy, you can't get more out if you don't put more in.

you wont get a rumble from a 4.0 it sounds like a 4.0 no matter what exhaust you put on just throw on a cherrybomb and a turndown and be done with it

If you buy the right 44 it is .25" thick and can take a hit if you get high centered. I have herd a few of these on different Jeeps they are not real loud but real nice and deep. personally I found I can get the same sound but a little louder with a stock pipe and no muff. That's on my DD and I have never gotten a warning even when getting a seat belt ticket. And can hardly here it with the windows up and music down. Just another option.

If you don't want loud on the inside, you don't want Flowmasters at all. Flowmasters are well known for their interior drone at hwy speeds. I'd also suggest something along the lines of a Dynomax, or Cherry Bomb Vortex. (if legal in your state).

Removing the cat is illegal. Discussing/ suggesting its removal is against forum rules.

Basically when it comes to the 4.0 you can't do much for exhaust work. I just bought a high-flow cat from a vendor on the forum and a Summit Turbo Muffler with the upgraded 2.5" pipes. I'm happy with it, and it isn't crazy loud either. Plus, and if I am mistaken please correct me, when you upgrade to 2.5" pipes, the larger pipe volume allows less of a resonating effect, essentially dampening the sound a bit.

Flowmasters sound good on v8's, not L6's. I know from personal experience, they sound decent at low rpms, but anything over 2500 is raspy and sounds like crap. I've put many different exhausts on my Jeep, and my favorite so far is my current Magnaflow. It's deep, but not loud, which is what I wanted.

If you don't want loud, stay away from glasspacks. Glasspacks sound pretty good on L6's, but they are well known for being loud inside and outside of the vehicle. Glasspacks are probably the loudest exhaust heard from inside the vehicle.

Muffler AFTER the axle? Have you even LOOKED under your XJ?
Homework Assignment: Go spend 2 hours under your jeep just looking at it.

Looks? Are you looking for a tip? Sounds like you belong in a honda....
These are not hondas. Mufflers dont go right before the rear bumper those are called FART CANS.
