Default is my cat going bad?

Ok I'm driving the jeep a good bit today. Two plus hours of highway driving one way. But I was driving on the highway 65-70 mph for about 40 min or so and got off the highway to grab a bite to eat. At the light I was at and into the parking lot the jeep was smoking a bit. Underneath. When I pulled into a parking lot and looked the cat was smoking. it happened one time before on a long road trip but I thought maybe I had water in the gas or something and that's what caused it. The temp gauge climbed a little once we were stopped at the light. Moved above 210 probably around the 220-230 mark. But I pulled over in the parking lot right away and shut her down. I'm guessing cat.....what's your thoughts? Am I right? Wrong? An idiot....lol.

Cats are supposed to get hot. Like real hot! Glowing hot.

Thats how the process works by reigniting or burning off unburnt fuel.

So it sounds like extended trips are heating the unit up and burning of any residual oil or debis.

Ok. Makes sense. That could be. Because it did seem to smell like oil or something was burning. Or grease....something. not strong though. Just a hint of something. All my fluid levels are spot on. There's brand new Toyota coolant in it now. And on the highway the temp was perfect. Just up until we got off and stopped moving. I do want to get the highflow cat I seen through the forum here. Would that help? It just seems to smoke a lot. Kind of embarrassing while sitting at a light.

I just installed a Magnaflo cat and the matching muffler. The sound is right for a 6 banger and doesn't make for much interior noise either.

11255 Muffler
23229 49 state cat

Found 'em on fleabay for 75 & 82 plus 60 for install

Cool. I think I may go with a set up like that too. I don't want loud but want something there. Any sound clips by chance? Just wondering....

could it be the o2 sensor, if it is you could be sending too much fuel to the engine, so the fans cant get the coolant cooled enough to cool the engine, but the highway air can. it could also make the cat get hotter than it should.

Ya that could be too. What's happening is after 40 or so minutes of 65 mph the temp gauge starts to climb above 210. Not much above it though. That's when it smokes. I can see smoke coming from under the jeep. Not a ton. But enough. Smoke only last a few minutes then the temp goes back down to a hair under 210. Happened twice on my 2 hour ride home. I'm gonna get a highflow cat and new O2s. Hopefully that helps.

Well I just put on a high flow cat I got from a guy I work with. It's much shorter then the cat I removed. So had to go get some piping and some pipe reducers and what not to make it all work. The piping on the cat was 2.5 inches. I also bought spark plug non foulers or whatever they are and fabbed one up to weld on to the pipe for my o2. Worked well. Sounds almost the same...maybe a tiny bit louder while getting on it. Don't know what brand cat it was. The box just said universal 2.5 cat. But I know its a few years old. But seems to work perfectly fine. No CEL yet. And I hope I don't get one.lol

Ok so I put that high flow cat on. Jeep has been running great since. I have drove it a bunch ans I do think its got a tiny bit more power. Exhaust sounds better too. I also noticed a few spots on my radiator that was leaking. Very tiny leaks and onky left drops or small puddle of coolant on the ground. So at work we use BG products and they make a stop leak. Poured it in the over flow tank and topped it off. So it sucked coolant in after some leaking. Only one day later and all leaking stopped. Ran good. And the jeep even ran cooler then before. But today im driving up to Ohio for a grad party. Three hour drive each way. I was curious to see how it would do. It's 90+ today. While cruising at 60-65 the temp was right around 220ish and stayed there. Which is normal right? I mean I'm steady at 60-65 revving 2000-2500 rpms. Up and down hills....western pa here then to Ohio where it will flatten out a little. My biggest concern OS after climbing a few of the bigger hills the temp would climb to almost the 235 mark which is the thin line between 210 and the last line where it would over heat. While at that temp it would smoke for 30 secs to a minute. Then drop back down to 210-220. Then be fine. Did it twice. What could this be? New cat, water pump, thermostat, fresh coolant, full tune up, and fresh oil change. I thought the old cat was bad. Guess not. Any ideas? I'm stumped. Coolant level is the same as when I left too. Same with oil level.oil pressure didn't change either.

Keep driving 'til it breaks then fix it. If you want to work on it before it's broken then do something about that leaky cooling system before the stop-leak seal fails.

I agree with half of this. Never keep driving a wounded vehicle when you know its got problems. You will just make things worse.

For starters, stop using that stop leak garbage. It only makes things worse.

If you have a problem, don't try and use a band aide. Fix the problem. Radiators are cheap, and easy to fix.

If a new, or at least fully working radiator doesn't solve your issue, get a coolant flush done. Then if that doesn't work, look into mate replacing your thermostat, and possibly the water pump.

Your vehicle is aging, it needs to be maintained.

Well I already did the thermastat and water pump. Complete coolant flush. The BG products work great. Not garbage. I know some of you don't like that stuff but it wasn't the cheap stuff at autozone or Walmart. It's been used many times at my shop on many cars. Usually just a temporary fix. Right now I'm moving so money is really tight. But Im buying a 3 core all aluminum rad from radiator barn. Just want to make sure I'm moved first. The jeep runs like a champ. I will probably do a compression test soon. Just to check. But I will be getting new hoses, new rad, and a Taurus e-fan. That's all going real soon. I'm just wondering what it could be. Idk if its a head gasket problem or what. I have only had it 6 months. And ill o have done is work on it it seems. Haha. Got new shocks, new leaf spring bushings, new shackles. And a bunch more. But I guess all in all its a great jeep. Any more suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

And this only happens while highway driving.60-70 mph. Around town and what not it won't go over 210 unless we are sitting for bit at a light. But it only gets to 218 when the e fan kicks on. Won't go higher.

With regard to cooling system maintenance, which list is shorter......what u have done or what u haven't done? If u replace it all at once, u only have to drain/refill coolant once.
