Default My jeep got rear ended :( what to look for???

hey all,

my Jeep got it up the tailpipe by a dodge Ram 1500 yesterday. My GF got whiplash, she was driving. The rear bumper is toast, folded it up over the bottom of the latch so the rear hatch wont open until i pull the bumper off. The mounts dont look to be bent and the floor pan dosent look wrinkled or anything. Taking it to a body shop monday. What else could of gotten damaged? Thanks for you time!

Chuck

That does not look too bad, look for any deformation around the bumper brackets and wrinkles in the floor. I think a bumper and brackets will be the only things needed to fix it. If you play your cards right the insureance may pay you enough to get a nice aftermarket bumper.

You'll know more when you get the bumper off. From what I can see, it looks like nothing more than a bumper bender and you can probably get a replacement for $50 or less at the JY. Things to look for would be...

1. Check for normal function of your hatch release. If there was any unibody damage the first thing it would affect is the latch, making it difficult to release or latch.

2. Check your hatch for cracks. It's made of fiberglass and it's pretty delicate when it comes to impact like that.

3. Check your unibody and bumper mounts for stress cracks in the paint. Each mount is held on by four beefy bolts and that entire structure is reenforced, with the bumper bent the way it is, it may have pulled the mounts in slightly, compromising the structure they mount to. But I doubt it.

I seriously doubt there's much damage beyond your bumper, though. I'd be more worried about my GF

That's about what mine looked like when I got it. I couldn't find any damage besides the bumper.

Look for rear alignment probs. My XJ got rear-ended and it went out of alignment. Also look for bent brackets.

Rock Auto has them new for $25, but watch the shipping if you are a ways from their distribution center.
