Default My Jeep won't start. 1990 cherokee laredo

I'd been having issues with my starter for the last year or so, and it finally crapped on me yesterday, so I bought a new one and replaced it. It still won't start! Terminals are hooked up correctly. Every time I try starting it, the temp gauge shoots all the way up. Is that normal? What's my next step?

The clicking means the starter isn't getting enough power. Check your battery voltage, try to start with a jump box. Verify the starter connections.

Thank you. I just got off the phone with a good friend who's got lots of experience. He tells me it's probably either my battery is bad or going bad, or the starter I just bought was bad out of the box. I'm gonna check into it and come back with my results.
