My Chevy inline did that on #3. (piston) In the Van I put blocks on the seats, 4X4 across on the blocks, jack ON that, tow strap around motor mounts over the jack. Lifted engine, pulled pan removed #3 rod with what was left of the piston FROM THE BOTTOM! Loosened the rockers on #3 and drove 120 miles home. It didn't sound quite right with most of the piston in the pan! 18 year olds in the middle of nowhere have done stranger things.

I think you should get it looked at if you can't do it yourself. At least check those torque converter bolts and see that it's all bolted together. Have'm pull the pan and wiggle the rods. Maybe one is just coming unbolted! Granted, it's almost surely toast, but strange things do happen. Even the top starter bolt hitting the torque plate can make a racket. Plus I think we are all curious if it is a rod or, a piston. (my vote)

Ok so i finally dropped my jeep off with my guy.. Had a couple ppl look at it, they say it doesnt sound like a rod, it sounds like its coming from up top under the valve cover..
Hopefully just a rocker or something loose

Lucky for you! "$". Maybe that four leaf clover helped /\. When my starter bolt was hitting the torque plate it didn't sound that bad, but would have been worse if it was longer. Thanks for getting back.

9-10-2011 "You should pull the little inspection plate on the bell-housing over the flywheel(torque plate), and check the bolts holding the torque converter."
Good news, Fantastic! D.
