Default My project.

Ok I want to convert my 96 Cherokee 2.5L/2WD into a 4.0L/4WD. I'm going to take a trip to a Jeep JY here by my house sometime this week.
I'm going to check the prices for a 4L engine and I want to know what parts do I need for the 4WD? Since I'm going to be taking the trip I can check out the parts I'm going to need to convert it into a 4WD so I can see how much this project is going to cost. Thank You!

you can't just bolt in the 4.0 and go.

you will basically have to re-wire the jeep.as well as change the tranny ( i do beleive the 4 cylinders came with a weaker tranny)

if it was me, i would get a donor jeep with a good engine and 4wd and bring everything over. would be more cost effective too.

with that being said, it might be more cost effective to sell your jeep and to get a jeep with the drivetrain you want as well.

Well I know that, but I mean I'm 18 and my dad bought me the Jeep, I like the Jeep I just want to be able to go off-roading here and there. I ofcourse need a bigger engine and the 4WD parts...ill rather spent on that and be able to keep the same car. I can't just tell my dad oh I want to sell it and get a different one, when he spent so much time finding the one he did.

why not keep the 4cyl and run it until it dies and do the 4wd swap now then lift etc.

4wd swap= transfercase and linkage, front and rear driveshafts, front axle, tranny-t-case adapter.

easily $500, probably more.

non-running or rotted out parts jeep with what you need: $200 give or take.

engine swap, forget about it. you will need a donor vehicle or a limitless amount of cash.

by the time your done all thats left of the jeep your dad spent so much time looking for will be the body.

you dont need a bigger engine either, many competition rigs run small 4 cylinders. gearing makes all the difference.

or just get a cheap 4x4 cherokee and use it as a trail beater and use the 2wd jeep for the street.

Well I just wanted to have that 4x4 option, but i heard that I needed an engine swap as well, but if my 2.5L can handle it I would just do that for now then. I mean 500+ is nothing for me right now, I have no bills an i make 2000+ monthly. I work at a warehouse and I get paid pretty good right now. So how much would the engine swap come out? round 1000+?

forget about the engine. run it until it dies.

do the 4x4 swap and put a lift/tires on it then regear and you will be set.

so basically for a 4wd swap i will need:

transfercase and linkage, front and rear driveshafts, front axle, tranny-t-case adapter.

is that right?

Once i regear and lift and do the 4x4 swap.

I would be able to do some light off-roading and stuff?

nope that should to it, start rummaging through the JY's. also if you have a decent camera (lots of good pictures) and some extra time i would love it if you did a writeup for CF on the swap.

start searching for some online writeups (aka sift through google). its a fairly bolt on project you just need the parts.
