Default Mysterious Clunk from Driver Side Rear End

So I've been hearing a knock/clunk both inside the cabin and outside the jeep. It happens when the jeep rocks back and forth. I thought it was first the spare tire but quickly figured out it wasn't. I shook the jeep side to side to find the noise and I've located the noise within the left side body of the jeep. It sounds like it's near the gas cap. Everytime I go over something that rocks the jeep back and forth I hear this knocking/clunking sound.

It's not the shocks, or leafs, or anything suspension/axel wise.

Any thoughts?

Possibly spare tire, on inside?

EDIT: Actually, not sure if that applies or not as you originally state it's on the Passenger side, but then refer to it near the gas cap and left side body of the jeep, which are on the Drivers side. Please clarify your information and we can attempt to help further.

Leaf spring hitting tail pipe... Check the tail pipe for rub marks.

My fault. It's the drivers side. Correct the title.

I removed the spare and still hear the sound.

It sounds like its near the hoses on the gas cap, but it's not.

I can't edit the thread title, but this is on the drivers side.

Anyone?

Have you checked the top bolts on the shock? I know from recent experience that they break really easily trying to take them off, wouldn't surprise me if they snapped from use.

I have a very similar sound coming from the rear drivers side. I do get the sound more just after parking and shutting it off and getting out of it. I have checked everything in side and out including shocks springs and so on. I have noticed that it is louder just after filling the tank. I really don't know if something is in the Fuel tank that that can move around or not. everything seems to be working fine including the fuel gauge. Mine has had this sound for about 3 years and it never effected anything that I have notice. Like I said it is more noticeable with a full tank of gas...

Do you have a kid that likes to play with marbles? And possibly put them in odd places?

I would remove the plastic trim piece in the hatch area and see if something is in there somehow? Just a thought

Behind the interior trim in the rear compartment there is all the harness connections for the hatch/tow package stuff. Maybe it came unclipped from its bracket and is swinging around.
