Two things I would do.
First, drain the trans using the plug. Refill it using almost 4 quarts of Dex/Merc trans fluid only.
Let it run for 5 or 10 minutes, even see if it wants to move, and then drain and fill once again. Don't drive it around if it's slipping!

Ok sounds good will try that first. They want $3,000 for the trans and install. That's all I paid for the Jeep ! I was bummed out pretty bad. I want to make the right decision on what to do from here. I actually still owe on it in a way. I got a loan and am paying on the loan instead of actually paying a car payment. So the title is clear if I wanted yo to trade it in but I think I would lose my *** big time! So I'm thinking worse case I get a new trans and just overhaul everything. Just not sure! But will start with draining it

Any ideas on what could/would make the transmission overheat? Like I mean absolutely HOT!!!! It had slipped that morning then after driving in heavy traffic started acting like I was driving with the parking brake on or something.

Listen, don't be intimidated by all of this. I know exactly how you are feeling, about working on jeep yourself, trying to get things right and then getting slapped in the face with issue after issue. My wife and I are in a similar position with trying to get out '01 sport done up just to the point of feeling like we can depend on it; it's out DD, and wifie needs it more than me. She won't get near it right now because of this really ruff idle issues that comes and goes, so she walks to work (short distance). Her walking back and forth makes me feel like a dip stick looser. So, I've been wrestling with similar pains. I'm not a mechanic either, but have some knowledge (got it from this site) and a little common sense, not much. LOL!
Anyway, don't let these issues FEAR you into anything until you've exhausted every avenue possible. Take it as slow as you can. Shop around if it does turn out to be your tranny, cuz $3k sounds very high. Look for a good used tranny, if that turns out to be the issues. Most of all, don't let this dictate your life man. Stay clam, and press forward.

Just go change it out and see what happens. Get 2 gallons of fluid.

Lack of maintenance kills vehicles quicker than almost anything you can do.
IIRC, there is a method of fluid change wherein the return line is disconeccted and you pour new in while old pours out. Would also investigate rear brake closer.
Not knowing your abilties, but seems if worse case you and couple of buds (friends and drinkable) you could swap a trans easy enough.

Question about tranny service
I don't know what kind of service history this tranny has had. The fluid looks a dull/slightly clearish light red/brown?, not bright red, not brown...smells normal, not burnt or funky. It was suggested to me that, if the tranny has never been serviced, I shouldn't service it now, because if I do it will break up the sludge inside and cause the tranny to slip and go bad right away. It has 135,000 miles. The pan is wet, leaks slightly and I'm thinking, as a matter of regular maintenance and need to do, I should service the tranny. No, I'm not having any problems with it, it seams to shift just fine. I have everything to do the service. I'd like to do it, replace the filter, fluid and stop the wet leak, as I'm trying to narrow down ALL the fluid leaks.
Advise?

If you crapped your pants a week ago, would you leave the load in your drawers so as not to disturb anything?

So I did a drain and fill myself and still acting like I'm trying to drive with the parking brake on. Feels like I'm pressing the brake and gas at the same time. Also transmission pan is ridiculously HOT ... I MEAN HOT...... Never seen a pan get that hot. So is it time to get a new trans? ?

At it again
Man guy's I need some help here. Ok so I had to get a new transmission. When I got it back there's a few things that are causing some alarm. 1st is if I back out of the driveway and go down the street and stop at a red light when my foot is on the brake pedal (I feel a hell of a vibration ) goes away when I take off but happens again just about every time I have the brake pressed down. Any ideas there ???
