Need help with Cherokee buy
Hey I am looking for advice on buying a 2000 cherokee. It has around 150k on it. I looked under the hood and undercarraige and no rust on anything or any fluid leaks. looks like it was never taken off road.
I was wondering how many miles everyone else has on there 2000 xj and when things started going (tranny etc) and what a good price to pay would be.
thanks for any help in advance

Try Edmunds or KBB for a price.

Mines a '94 hit 150k last week. All the probs Ive had are off road thrashing related. Just check to make sure everythings been serviced regulary and that sort of thing.
I payed $2k for mine but Im in NZ so everythings was over priced
Edit: Mine only leaks on the end of the front axle shaft lol, used to leak out of a cracked oil filter

I have a 2000 xj (cherokee) 166k miles, I paid $2500 last fall for it and then put $1000 into needed repairs (parts cost, my labor). 2000 XJs have some electrical issues, most of the time they are easy to fix.
1 issue with late '99-2001 XJs is the infamous 0331 head that cracks on maybe 10% of them. You should look for milky stuff under the oil fill cap or have a shop inspect the head for cracks. Coolant loss is also a clue to a cracked head but that can take time to notice. Read here for more threads on the 0331 head:

Just bought my 2001 last month. It had 99K on it. I paid 4800. One thing I would suggest is getting a carfax. The previous owner had it serviced at a Dodge dealer and that showed up on the carfax. At least I know the oil was changed. Good luck

Don't put too much faith in carfax, they have a disclaimer that they are not responsible for any wrong info.

I bought my 2000 with 80K miles two years ago for roughly $6000. Over two years I've put on 40K more miles and maybe $4000 in repairs, including front axle u joints, sway bar links, new brake pads and rotors, new rear springs (to replace very saggy ones), new tires, new shocks, decarbonized the engine, new ignition coil pack, new spark plugs, new fluids in trans, transfer case, & diffs, and a new washer fluid pump. The previous owner had taken care of the body and interior so it was super clean, but they didn't pay much attention to the mechanical stuff. You can count on some things going wrong but you have to be prepared to put money into a 10 year old vehicle to keep it running well (especially if you live where they use salt on the roads). I've fixed a number of small things myself but I have a good mechanic too for the big stuff. Now my XJ is in the best shape it's been in for years, and it's back to being a reliable vehicle.

I've met some people with over 200k on their XJs, so things don't really start "going" on them for a while. I'd give the guy an offer for $2000 and see what he says.

I know for sure that they do guarantee an accurate title record tho.. meaning if it is or was ever a salvaged vehicle and they don't have it on your report, they buy the car back. Who knows if this ever happens, but it is the only way I know of to find out if a vehicle title was a "salvaged" title in another state.

you could beat the seller down on the price of the 2000 xj because of the cracked head. If the bearings were not damaged by coolant in the oil a new updated head or a junk yard non 0331 head could make it worth while, if you're handy with tools.

Two places that can be looked at real quick/checked easily are the coolant (cold engine) and under the oil fill cap. If those 2 areas pass inspection, it may be worth looking at the vehicle further, if not, walk (my $0.02).
