What fluid is in the trans? The wrong fluid will shift horribly and also eat up the brass synchros. Do not use GL rated gear oil. Use something safe for the brass synchros like synchromesh reline MTL or even plain 10W30 synthetic motor oil.

If you do a fluid change, look for brass in the oil. If it looks like glitter the synchros are shot.

Going to have to agree with 'Jeepin Aint EZ' - had a 96 with over 200k original clutch....could no longer shift it.... had everything clutch related replaced, problem solved............

Yeah, but replacing everything may be unnecessary and unaffordable for some folks.

I had the opposite when I bought my MJ. Dealer gave me a great deal on it, saying it just needed a clutch. It certainly felt like a worn out clutch at 180k miles way when I drove it, having to double clutch on the test drive. A week later, I found the receipt in the glovebox showing the clutch had been replaced 2 months earlier. Draining the oil which had tons of brass glitter told me the real problem was bad synchros.

Does this look like the shavings/glitter you are talking about?

Doesn't look like a lot, but yes that looks like brass to me. Could be shot synchros or you've been damaging them by trying to ram it into gear without the clutch fully releasing.

try "double clutching" it, as has to be done on a gearbox with no synchros

If that makes things better, thats a big clue

good double clutching takes a lot of practice though

Yes, a little.

Especially when your first vehicle was a 52 Ford pickup with a non-synchro trans.

Replaced the master and slave cylinder and still having trouble getting into 1st gear and from 3 to 4. I do hear some grinding going into reverse. With this I am assuming it is my syncros going out? The one thing that does not make sense to me though is sometimes I have no problems shifting and do not hear any grinding however other times I do. It tends to be worse in the heat and when I have been driving for a little while. Any guesses or are my syncros done? I know it is hard to say over talking online but I am sure someone has had similar issues before.

Could it be a dragging clutch or you think syncros?

I think precautionary I am going to change the transmission fluid and put MT90 in there to see if some good oil helps with what I am dealing with. Is it worth changing the transmission filter too?

Thanks
