Need help with overflow bottle!

Default Need help with overflow bottle!

Iv been having on going problems with my over flow bottle. It builds up so much pressure and blows the lid off the bottle and leaks my coolant everywhere. I do not have a blown headgasket or a blown head I tested for it something jus causes pressure to build up so much I tried clamping the cap down still fails... Can anyone give me possible problems such as failing water pump or thermostat? Please help?

how much coolant are you putting in the bottle?

Check this. I have an 01 XJ. I was driving down a highway at 65 mph. My dash looked like a F16 having a malfunction. Everything lite up! I stopped.... Nothing. Drove again... Didn't see it was overheating..... Added antifreeze, made it home. Next day, same thing. Thought it was the hot weather.... Cool line was leaking. Called a former coworker at my old job.... I asked what type of antifreeze to use. He said.... RED, I was using green. Make sure you have the right type for that engine! Call a dealership and find out. Start there.

Also check the thermostat.

it needs a radiator cap mine was doing that too new cap fixed it

That's if it has a cap. My 89 has the black cap on the bottle. There wasn't any cap on the radiator. When I replaced the radiator, I had to ask my friend to double check it. No cap!

I had the same problem a few years back. The cap would blow off or just leak. I tried to find a new cap for it but did not find any. I ended up going to the Junk yard and pulling a new bottle and cap that was more heavy duty off another cherokee. It has not leaked since.

I'm 16 I'm new at all of this how do I change the thermostat? And I noticed it likes to overheat when I put antifreeze through the motor so it spewed out the cap so I put water and a antifreeze and the temp runs fine now Im so lost

don't over fill the bottle. only up to the post on the inside..about a quarter full or so.

also think about converting to an "open" cooling system.
i got tired of replacing that bottle.

remove the 2 hose's from thermostat housing.then take the 2 bolts out remove housing , scrape all the old gasket off ,make sure its clean and smooth ,take old thermostat out and put new 1 in and get new gasket or some high temp permatext the red kind is what I use thenput back together

Look at the bottle real good, those bottles have a tendency to crack, they are made to hold a certain pressure if the bottle is cracked and it cannot build pressure or if it has air bubbles in the system it will overheat making you think it builds to much pressure. so check out the bottle real good. Step Two put your jeep on an incline with the front higher pull the top line small line that hooks to the engine and slowly fill it with a 50 50 collant water mix until it comes out the engine side, then put the line back on this will bleed the air bubbles out of the engine put the lines back on.Step Three start your jeep turn your heater on this will open the heater bypass valve and again slowly fill the jeep with above mentioned coolant mix be careful not to over fill the bottle only half way up the bottle or to the line on bottle if still legible, This should bleed the air bubbles out of your heater core. After this you should be good. make sure that your jeep gets to operating temp meaning at least 190. when checking your bottle make sure that you look real good for cracking around the hose nipples they are nitorious for cracking there. and the thermosta is located on the front of the engine dead center and has collant hoses atached to it. Hope this helps.

Ok that will help alot couple of questions tho I'n your step two are you talking about the hose that runs from the top of the bottle where the coolants comes out of the engine because I noticed when I turn off the motor it bubbles I'n the tank but I can hear then coming from the top hose can you go into a little more detail as I'n the what hoses to undo and what end the pour. Into?

I believe he is talking about the top house on the thermostat housing remove it and poor in there until runs out then put it back on

Could just be the cap, when newer or replacement tanks heat up they distort the bottle or cap or both. I would Try a junkyard bottle before anything else.
