Need help! TRANSFER CASE jeep cherokee sport!
Hey guys I currently own 2 87 jeep Cherokees. And i Just purchased a 95 Jeep Cherokee sport with the 4.0l and the auto trans i picked it up for $250 only has 169,xxx miles but it needs a transfer case. The mechanic the previous owner had look at it said just go to a junkyard and pick one up. The tag on the transfer case says its a 231j my question is we wanted to just buy a parts jeep. I know someone who is selling an 89 parts jeep with the auto trans and i was wondering if these transfer cases would be the same? And i read something about how some were 21 spline and some were 23? Any help would be appreciated!
-Thank you.

As long as its still a 231 tcase you put in it and still the same OBD (which Im assuming is OBDI since its a 95) then you should be fine. If you put a 242 then you have to get a new tranny to fit it since its AW4 or something like that. Somone else can elaborate if they know. Also, 231 is 21 spine and 242 23? Someone else maybe able to clarify as well. That's just my understanding of it all. I'm here to learn too lol.

The spline count changed in 91. Anything pre-91 won't fit anything later without swapping out the shaft.

What Low Range said. As far as swapping out the input shafts, not too difficult if you have ever taken a 231 apart and put it back together. Just take your existing shaft and put it in the new t case.
Also, didnt the speed sensors change from analog to digital sometime around 95? This is easy to swap out too though.
What is wrong with the existing case?

Do the post-RENIX 231s even have a location for the vacuum switch to be installed? Personally I think it's a great excuse to eliminate the vacuum disconnect but some people like it

Auto transmission should be the same.

Honestly i do not know what is wrong with the existing case. the car drives fine in 2wd.. but in 4 makes loud popping noises... and i only moved it a couple feet in 4wd... But the mechanic that looked at it before i purchased it said that if they kept driving it the transfer case could lock up and break other things. so im not really interested in driving it.. And ive never had a transfer case apart... is it hard to change the shaft for a complete newbie?
Thanks!

It sounds to me like your chain is stretched in your existing case. If you run into issues changing the input shaft for some reason, you can always just swap the chains.
