Need to kow correct ring Pinnnion and gears for 1999 Cherokee 4 wdr Dana 35 rear
Have a 1999 Cherokee sport with full time 4 WD . Have a Dana 35 rear axle. Need to know what ring and pinion and gears I need. Gear ratio, part numbers anything . I usually but from Rock Auto but looking at others like Quadraterk. Last time I ordered got the wrong parts. .

Does the other axle have a tag? If it does, and its a 3.55, for example, you need another 3.55. If there is no axle tag, grab the jackstands. Mark the tire at 12 o'clock. Do the same with the driveshaft. Put it in neutral and spin the tire one full revolution, while watching the mark on the driveshaft.
If the driveshaft spins 3 1/2 times, you have a 3.55. If it spins 3 3/4 times, you have a 3.73.

Auto will be 3.55 and manuals have the 3.07 ratio. If your Dana 35 is bad I would take the opportunity to swap a Chrysler 8.25 in instead of wasting money on a Dana 35.

Before you switch out axles completely, does the Jeep have ABS? That will be a deciding factor in switching out the axle to a C8.25. None of the XJ C8.25 had ABS. It's hit & miss on the D35.
Options;
Check the front differentials tag for gear ratios.
Can you find the thin metal tag on the differential housing as previously mentioned? It's held on by the diff cover bolts.
Count the rotations as mentioned before.
Call the dealer with the VIN.
- are you the original owner?
Roll the dice;
Does the Jeep have a FACTORY MOPAR TOW HITCH?
FACTORY external transmission cooler?
FACTORY 2 row radiator.
If you answered "Yes" to these, then you PROBABLY have a 3.73 axle.
If it does not / never had a tow hitch, doesn't have the external transmission cooler, and only a single row radiator, you probably have a 3.55 axle.

ABS is easy to get rid of if you want to swap axles. As for the 3.73 gears I have yet to see a 92 and later model 4.0 auto that came with 3.73 gears. My 97 has the tow package with the auxiliary cooler and it has 3.55s just like all the others I have seen. They may have made some with 3.73s but they seem to be unicorns.
