I have a 87 cherokee 4.0 with the ba10 5speed trans.
Im not sure about how the trans sends the reverse signal so idk how to check it. but i know that there is no power to the reverse light bulbs.
any info on what to check and where to start would be appreciated!
thanks

just checked Trans fuse and its good has power on both sides of the fuse.

I did put a new clutch in about a month ago but the reverse lights were not working before I dropped the trany and I hooked everything back up that I removed.
If you know where the plug is located on the BA/10 and possibly what pins in the plugs have power or out put to the reverse lights that could help. or any other suggestions are appreciated.
thanks

On the BA 10/5 transmission the reverse light switch is on the drivers side of the transmission, should be a little rubber seal with two wires coming out of it.
You can jump the two wires and if the lights come on then you know its the switch, if they don't you have an issue somewhere else. Make sure your ignition is on when you do this.

Thanks nofords4me! That is the exact info I was after plus some!
after work tomorrow I will test out that switch and I guess if there is no power to the switch I could just run a key on power wire to it and go from there.

also just for my curiosity is the "trans" fuse in the fuse box only for the reverse lights or does it actually fuse other things?
thanks

well i dug into it a bit tonight and I got it working for now.
started at the trans switch and did not have power so I cut the factory power feed and wired in my own power feed and now all is working.
I would still like it to be wired into the factory system but I need to get more info or a wire diagram. idk if there is another fuse? maybe a relay? or it might just be a bad or broken wire.
if anyone has any suggestions please do share.
I just need to know what happens from in between the "trans" fuse and the plug to the transmission reverse switch.
Thanks to those who have helped me so far!

I figured you'd notice if your turn signals weren't working...
