For a shop to do it? I'd guess anywhere between $800 and $1000. That would be to install new gears though.
You could do a junkyard axle swap and save a few bucks.
I still have a hard time believing that was something that happened between parking spaces though...

Finally got the call from the second mechanic. The place i normally go for checkups and maintenance doesn't do what needs doing so it went to a second mechanic. He said 1500 for new parts and 1100 for used. Said everything else looks great. Told him I paid 1500 for it 2 years ago and the mechanic laughed saying I robbed the guy. He also said he drives a Cherokee too because they are so awesome and when I asked if he thought it was worth fixing he said he wouldn't think twice about it and that Ill probably get at least another 100,000 out of it. And yes I realize at least some of his talking was trying to make money but this mechanic was recomenended by every person I talked to no bad reviews from anyone even online.

for your info, it is about 800 dollars for a used rear here in New Jersey, prices vary from state to state, region to region........you can't get a decent used rear anywhere in Nj for under 800.
It's also only a 3 hour labor job according to my service writer program, adding .5 per side for swapping over old parts
