I had trouble with the NSS when I first bought my jeep (94 XJ) the PO wired in a switch for the reverse lights so I knew the NSS was out, went to clean it only to find the PO cracked the case trying to do the fix. I just spliced the wires on the body side of the NSS harness works fine now, no codes, no funky shifting, no loss of mpg.

Just for the record...
My NSS is bad also. It will NOT start in neural or by just randomly running the shifter through the gears, i have to use the alternate method instead.
Turn the key with the left hand to the "start" position,
With the right hand, push the button on the shifter and Gently finesse the shifter forwards and then backwards several times (while still in park).
I hope this helps out for those that haven't gotten around to cleaning their NSS's yet.

Another way to verify its a starter is to see if the signal wire to the starter gets power when the key is turned to start. You'll need 1 person to put a test light on the smallest wire on the starter, the clamp on a good ground, then have someone turned the key to start, if the test light lights up,its a bad starter. If it doesn't light up until you wiggle the shifter in park or nuetral its a bad NSS.

Yeah my NSS is being a ***** too. It used to not wanna start in at all but got it fixed to the point where if it won't start in park I can move it to neutral and it'll start that way. So at least no more shifter shaken for me.

I had mine bypassed a few months ago and it will start in all gears now, no backup lights which sucks. I have the same issue like that guy who had a bad starter. The car won't start sometimes now but when we take off the battery cables and reconnect then it will start for a couple of trips then nothing again. I'm thinking it could be the starter too, but the alt and starter were tested a couple months ago and both were fine. Maybe it could be battery terminals not making a connection. This Jeep also needs a muffler so it has many issues.

Thanks, that is good info. My boyfriend took it apart, cleaned it(it was really dirty) and replaced the contacts. It worked for about a month then same thing again. Car wouldnt start. I have the bypass in place again and I think i will just have to spring for a new one....when i want to spend the $250 dollars to replace it.

I just bought a 97 xj with no reverse light and cel codes 0700 0705, getting the nss of the tranny is a pain in the a$$, i tried but ending up breaking it so ordered a new one for $45 from auto parts warehouse and dabbed a little motor oil on the shaft and it slid on with a little force, but all works great now and reverse lights work too!!
