Neutral Safety switch

Regarding the bypass (original thread), I cant find the instructions anymore (yes, I tried cleaning the NSS, thing is now half broken and hanging in, waiting for new one, so need to buy time).
Now the classic "was it the blue wire or red?"situation.
I can recall connecting the two black wires (one black, one black-with-white-stripe)
But was it on the switch side or the other (ECU) side?
Tried to add pictures, wont allow. My wires are not marked with letters but numbers: above mentioned wires are in position 7 and 8.

Hey rooler. Without me knowing just listen. I guess it's got the normal SPDT relay. (single pole, double through). The side 'arms" , look like this>( l l). They are 85 and 86 or something. The current to energize the relay coil goes through there. One side gets juiced from the switch, and the other needs to be grounded. It seems to me you could ground that, if the NSS won't. Idk, not sure. Then the relay will shoot power from the bat right to the solenoid. It probably get's power at the vertical 30 terminal and goes up crossways past the other two, out at 87. The middle 87a, I don't think matters here.
Besides others I think F1 has some diagrams.

Those relays can work every which way, but that there would be normal though. (87a gets juiced resting, if 30 is hot), Don't think that matters here. Anyway my relay is different and the solenoid wire is green! Good luck!

Ha! Yea, I did figure out I got off on the wrong track. (was just going towards making it start). First, I don't know. That said I think the NSS does other functions so I think you do want it plugged in. I'm pretty sure "F1addict" knows those inside out, you might message him....I would need to search it. I think I saw that you would jump the jeep side, to get it going to get home. Myself, I'd probably do it right at the relay. I didn't mean to add confusion, I thought you might be in a jamb just to get'r running.

Just to throw my opinion in...
I was having the usual problems and what not so I cleaned it...it didn't work so thanks to the forum I bought a brand new one off ebay for $40!!!
Got it installed and all I can say is WOW!!!
it now starts perfect, back up lights work perfect, overdrive works perfect, and compared to how it shifted before (which I thought was normal) it now shifts like a mercedes!!!
Just my .02

similar issue
I have searched all over & can't find specifics for my 97 grand laredo 4.0
Will the bypass in this thread also work for me? I can't figure out where the harness is under the hood. Do I connect the same wires too? Any help would be appreciated, And sorry if I'm posting in the wrong place.

01 Grand Cherokee nss problem?
I recently had my neutral saftey switch replaced in my 01 Grand Cherokee Laredo, 4.0 I6. But it has failed to start a few times, so I've had to put it into neutral and it fires right up. Both the neutral saftey switch and the harness were replaced by my mechanic ( who is a trusted local mechanic) everything was replaced as it should be. No issues with shifting and my backup lights function fine. Any ideas what could be wrong.?

Maybe your mechanic did the same thing? How much did he charge you for the part? Check with your mechanic, the part may be warrantied.

Then I would say not out of the realm of possibility that it failed or is failing. Mine died completely. Would not start in neutral or by wiggling the shifter etc. Maybe yours just needs adjusting, I dunno.
Also, I never saw a $35 NSS from advance. Cheapest I've seen on their site was $135 or something like that.

Won't slide off bolt
This post, and some YouTube videos (search Jeep Cherokee NSS) have been a big help to me. Backup lights don't work in reverse and sketchy starts. All was going well with removing NSS until I found it impossible to slide the housing off the shifter shaft. A video showed loosening the nut(after flattening the clips on the washer) then using a flat screwdriver to pry the NSS sideways. Won't budge. Felt I was going to strip the bolt with continued prying on the nut. Did I miss a step? Had to put it all back together because Jeep needed to be used, starts fine in park but no reverse lights. The expertise of the forum users would be appreciated--if you know of a video to link me to, even better.

Welcome to CF...Well, we know it's a Jeep. Could guess it's an 89. Bit frustrating when the info is not filled out. Yes it may be findable somewhere, but please spank that smart thing until it get's it, OK?
If it's an 89 jumping/juicing the middle terminal here on the start relay should keep you afloat if the NSS won't trigger it.
(This is in the diagrams in my sig, I'm gathering smart things do not see)
