Default New Exhaust

I need a new muffler and I'm not sure what to go with. I want a deep throaty rumble, I don't want to get the wrong muffler and make my XJ sound like a honda hatchback haha... So, Cherry Bomb Glasspack, Flowmaster 40 or 44, etc....?

Flowmaster FTW

The flowmaster super 44 has an aggressive tone you might like.

Some people also recommend spintech, but I have no experience with them.

I'd like to see the proof. All a cat is, is a honey comb. It is calculated into the engineering for the amount of back pressure it will give. I could go deeper but it would be like arguing that a throttle body spacers actually helps.

im by no means an expert but ive seen them listed with say 450 holes psi versus 285 holes psi one would think 450 would move more air through ?

Well just because the ability to flow more through is there doesnt make it better. Lets take for example like the K&N Air filters on lets say a Holly 650, The K&N allows over 800CFM to flow through it, well the carb is this case only needs 650 to perform properly. Now you also have to take into account is that K&N in a box or is it open element. Yes in the open element application you will notice more throaty sounds from the intake as well as better throttle responce but as far as anything else, not to much.

The same kind of idea goes into an exhaust, if you have a 2" pipe down to the normal cat then back to the 2" pipe this is all calculated into the enginereing of the motor for back pressure and what not. Now if you take that same set up and put a "hi-flow cat" in its place you are still restricted by the pipes as well as the engineering. Putting a hi-flow cat in place could potentially create a turbulance in the exhaust producing ill effects or just do nothing at all. Old cats (from what I understand) had some sort of beads in them making a drag on the flow, however new cats use a platinum honey comb design that is completely less restrictive. There have been some studies to support for and against this very argument. I myself tend to go off my experiences. The seat-o-the pants meter is a pretty good one for me. Now do realize that even just replaceing the cat with OE parts you will notice benefits and thats just from a clean cat.
