over 200,000 is on the high side for these old xj's. 178 isnt too bad they go over 300,000 if well maintained
I'd pay $1500-$2000 tops for a 93
find out what transfer case it has

well I personally wouldnt BUY one at over 200,000 miles. there's one's with lower miles out there. everyone's got a different opinion
OP-here's some examples of both ends of the stick. all great well running rigs

Look for oil leaks at the valve cover, oil filter adapter and rear main seal. Also, inspect the cooling system and how much corrosion the components of it have. As stated above, look for rust (that is a sign of a very bad thing).
All in all, do a full inspection, front to back, top to bottom. You'll be in for a major headache if you don't take a look at every inch of it. Because yes, 178K could be a lot. But that is nothing if the car was properly maintained and received the love it deserved

I live in CA so I dont have to worry about a whole lot of rust here. so I've never seen it
but I've heard to look on the panels and rockers and underneath of course. under the carpet on the floor pans is another major spot
wipe down the t-case a bit. should say either 231 or 242 on there
231- part time 4WD. supposedly better for beating trails off road
242- full time 4WD. you can take it on dry pavement any time you want
