Hello I've got a 1996 jeep cherokee I'm having problems with the speakers. The tweeters are still working but the rest arent. I refuse to believe that all four other speakers blew at the same time. I've removed the radio to investigate for broke lose wires and also the boots in my door jams are intact and in good shape. Any suggestions? Could the other speakers run off a separate fuse?

Stock or aftermarket system? Amplifier(s)? If so is it running separate channels to the tweeters?

The whole sound system is stock. And I can't tell if the tweeters are running a separate chanel the others aren't playing anything.

There is what I believe to be a stock amp under the rear seat all wires look fine. If that was bad wouldn't the tweeters also be not working?

if yours is like my 98 you may have a problem with the plug in the rear driver side panel. Remove the panel and there might be a plug there that would work the rear speakers in the speaker bar. It also seams to control the front speakers too. I get problems with the plug in mine and the radio will work but I will get no sound coming out of any of the speakers till I mess with that plug. It is worth a look.

Look for a chaffed wire somewhere. If a speaker wire is shorting it will kill the sound to the entire system. Ask me how I know.

  1. The boots can be intact but the wires not.
  2. Tweeters may run on a separate channel.

If you can find another audio source to drive those speakers, disconnect them completely from the stock system and hook them (one at a time) to the other sound source. I'm with you - it's probably not the speakers.

In the same vein, connect your head's output directly to the speakers, bypassing the amp in the rear. If they work fine, you know it's the amp. If not, you know it's the head, or the wiring in between. This is assuming you are driving the amp with speaker output from the head, rather than line level output. Do you know what you are looking for to tell the difference?
