Default New NSS intermittent starting

1997 4.0

Just replaced the NSS after running around with a paper clip in the connector for a while. Replaced it, started it, reverse lights work, and I finally have cruise control.

The next morning I started it and drove about 10 miles, went to start it again after 5 minutes and it wouldn’t do it. I unplugged the NSS and plugged it back in and it started just fine. The next day I had to short it with a paper clip, start it, and plug it back in which allowed me to have cruise control. Later that day it started fine.

I’ve cleaned both male and female connectors thoroughly and clocked the switch in multiple different positions. Now it’s sitting in my driveway unable to start regardless of shifter position. Any help would be appreciated.

Also: I noticed when trying to adjust the switch using the reverse light method the lights stayed on throughout the full range of motion of the NSS. I’m not sure if this is significant or not.

SOLVED: The connector that comes from the ECM has openings that are bigger than the pins coming off the NSS. I bent down the two pins from the NSS that you would typically short with a paper clip. I guess that allowed them to make contact and it’s starting up now.

Yes, it's significant. Did you buy a new one or used one?

Knockoff. $51 from 1A Auto. I read a lot of the reviews and it seemed fine considering it was $51 vs $300.

I'd yank it off and bench test it. Check the stem on the transmission and the new NSS to make sure they're moving like they're supposed to, not physically broken, missing pieces etc.

If that's OK, perhaps the harness plug or harness has a short, so then start unraveling. What engine codes do you have?

Yeah I got one when mine disintegrated after I Arnolded it off. They're OK.

You can also use the schematic in that thread to see if the harness is good, and perhaps send you in the right direction.

P0700 when I short it with a paperclip. No CEL when it’s plugged in and not starting.

Will do. I’ll clean up the grounds as well and let you know what I get.

All of the readings on the multimeter come out where they should be. CEL is only on when I short it with a paper clip. It isn’t on when the paperclip is gone and the jeep isn’t starting. It has to be something in the NSS since shorting the pins lets it start just fine. Those pins test 0.9 ohms when in park though. That would suggest there isn’t anything wrong with the switch.

Are the reverse lights on in reverse (only reverse)?

The OP edited his first post to:

"SOLVED: The connector that comes from the ECM has openings that are bigger than the pins coming off the NSS. I bent down the two pins from the NSS that you would typically short with a paper clip. I guess that allowed them to make contact and it’s starting up now."

So looks like he's good to go!!

Well done!!
