New owner questions about dash
So I just picked up a '95 XJ from a friend. Previous owner (not my friend) appears to have done quite a number on it. I already rebuilt the rear brakes with all new parts after PO put them together altogether wrong.
I've been pouring over the fsm, and a couple things make me wonder.
1)My gauge cluster has the large fuel gauge, trip odometer, and working temp, oil, and voltage gauges. The fsm shows this as half 'high-line' half 'low-line' cluster. Is this right?
2)PO also cludged in a cheap headunit, including cutting off the oe connector. I'm fine getting a replacement connector, but the radio was in the middle of the air controls and the vents. Isn't the radio supposed to be on top? And if it isn't, why would they do that?

First, welcome to the forum!
Looks like your cherokee has had a little custom modification done to it
As for your cluster.. I've never actually seen a cluster with one of the idiot light along with real gauges, AND the retarded big gas gauge AND no tach.. Maybe he combined anothere head unit with his? dont know if that possible.. but may be the case. Either way if theres something about it you dont seem to like you can find another gauge cluster and replace it.
Now for the radio.. first off, looks like your lower vent is missing? no big deal, hard to aim anyways. The radio and heater controls are reversed. Some do this to fit a flip out screen head unit in so the screen can actually "flip up" others do it just for the hell of it. Either way, you can easily move them back if you like.

Thanks for the quick reply! I could tell just from pulling the rear brakes that this is gonna be a going trend with this xj. PO had put the adjuster mechanism on the left side the same way as the right, not mirror image. Both long brake shoes were on the driver side, short ones on the passenger. I still have to figure out how to remount the new abs sensor on the mount damaged from the adjuster pieces flying around inside the drum.
Now that you mention the flip up screen, it was a cheap ipod dock unit. I didnt think about the clearance with the top of thedash until now. I don't really mind the giant gas gauge, but not having a tach just bothers me for some reason. I was told that it had a police package on it, so i keep running into things that i'm not sure if they're 'custom' mods, or legitimate factory pieces.

get your VIN run at the local dealership... that will tell you if you have any questions. Also if you do have a police of government package have fun they are entertaining for parts.

for mine ( 00 ) the steering box is originally the same as a durango, the rear u-joint at the axle is from a 97 Dodge Dakota 4x4 v8. The front Wheel joints are from another vehicle and my alternator is larger at 124 amps. The interior does have carpet and I have only cruise, power mirrors and a/c. From what I can tell some of the earlier gov. package xj had column shift, vinyl floors, power idle, 10" rear drums. When I contacted jeep and chrysler to get more info I was told that they don't really have a better listing of the parts. I would LOVE some more info also and if someone out there knows more please teach me.

I just bought a 1995 Country Edition. In the process of working out all the kinks too. I have to replace the front axle assembly because the existing unit is so rusted out that I cannot put the new OME suspension on it without fear of it crumbling apart in the process. It will be nice when I am done, I like 1995 XJs. Your photos are not appearing on my browser - can you fix that? I would like to see them. Thank you. JB

Residentg - pictures are working for me, but it's just a shot of the gauge cluster and center of the dash.
