I'm on #3. After #1 I figured it needed to be shimmed. After #2 I was sure it was chipped teeth on the flex plate or a cracked flex plate. So I took off the inspection cover and spun the motor and not one tooth was chipped. Was absolutely mint. So for #3 I brought it back to autozone and paid the difference for a new starter. Not a reman. And so far so good. I spoke with the salesman, and they have a remarkable amount of returns on starters.

The starter is really straight foward. Shouldn't take more then 20 minutes. Disconnect the negative. Disconnect the connection. Unbolt the starter cable. Mine was 1/2 inch socket. Unbolt the bottom bolt. Should be 9/16. Unbolt the top bolt. Should be 15mm. Don't let it drop on your face. And that's it.

yeah , i just did it last week! tools still laying there. b4 i started i tightened the batt terminals AGAIN ! and didnt try the key, just left it on and jumped the ign wire to the hot wire. it clicked twice and cranked, fired up.
dont know if it would have done it with the key.
drove till hot, parked and it started 3 times ok so ill check in morning when cold, wont trust it!!
i guess ill go over every connection, clean and tighten.
it clicked once when i first put it in so imm in doubt,oh well...

Sounds like the main problem is buying Autozone crap.

this one from napa... i need advice on the sound of bad batt contacts!.
in the past yrs on other cars i got used to a clicking sound,cl, cl, clk with loose connections.

the jeep just goes clik once. i guess the volts drop and it just stops there. last night i cleaned both again and added a big washer to the lead clamps and really cranked them. it started many times. need to repeat today and hope it is /was the batt terminals, my goof.

report later, ne more click and its going back!!
